Preparing rifle for sanding/paint?

I use gun oil on my rifle all the time, and I figure I would need to remove the oil before painting. I currently have the rifle apart and have everything ready for sanding. Once I sand it down, what should I use to clean and remove potential left over oil? Obviously something safe that wont cause new paint to flake..

before cerakoting i do a 30 minute soak in acetone, sand blast then another 30 minutes in the acetone. there will be no oil left to foul up your refinishing.
 
If it's a wood stock you are talking about and you are just refinishing it, I like to use citristrip and steel wool to take it down to bare wood, and then I use boiled linseed oil to refinish it. I use 000 steel wool to apply the oil. It looks and feels beautiful when finished. It just takes some patience and elbow grease.
 
I have a rifle stock that a previous owner has painted over completely with something resembling the clear coat on a car -- by completely, I mean the shoulder plate, grip plate and magazine plate along with all screws holding these in place. Will citristrip remove this clear finish without damaging the plastic shoulder and grip plates or the blueing on the magazine plate?
 
After you get the oil all off, I would recommend to skim coat the stock with Bondo(car body filler) this will allow you to fill in all the grain and allow you to get a more professional finish without divots showing threw from the grain of the wood.
I am an custom cabinetmaker and we do this regularly when color laquering wood like Apen or Poplar. Make sure you use a filler-primer to help aid in a smooth finnal finish.

Thanks all, its for the metal portion, action/barrel. I got some acetone and cleaned her off after sanding. I put the first coat of paint on, after the curing process I will sand and add all the "decorative" paint. Should be pretty nice! I'll post pics here.
