Hi

Just wondering if anyone knew where to get prescription glasses. I am hoping to keep the bill around $400 not sure if this is realistic or not but I hope it is. I mostly shoot skeet but will shoot trap and hope to shoot sporting clays. I shoot in both the winter and the summer and was also wondering what is the best lens colour for the sports and times of year.

Thanks.

I just went to the optician I use and had him get me a pair of Ranger's. I bought Edge frames with two sets of differing colour prescription lenses for $560. Frames with one set was $400 and $160 for the additional set of lenses. For years I shot with Vermilion colour lenses then my new Rangers I ordered both a light orange and vermilion and I have to say I prefer the light orange. I think Ranger refers to them as tangerine.,

I use Zenni Optical prescription glasses with lenses in different colours. I usually use vermillian (a fancy name for pink) when shooting orange clays against a green background although I tried orange the other day and I think its a better way to go. I also use yellow in the winter with varying degrees of success. Whatever you buy, get a choice of colours for the lenses. It's not uncommon to see shooters at big events changing colours as the day goes on or the light changes. It does make a difference.

Thanks for the advice. Will check out both of those options. Does anyone have the ess shooting glasses with a prescription. My dad has the glasses and likes them was wondering if people use the prescription piece with them.

Not to derail this: Does anyone wear contacts when shooting skeet or trap so they can just use a non-prescription set of eyewear ? I wear bifocals and was thinking I might be better off with contact lenses with my distance prescription and then a pair of Pilla's. Anyone else try this or have advice ? Most of the prescription shooting glasses don't have enough room for my left eye prescription anyways (at least I'm right eye dominant) and I have a hell of a time picking up left to right targets out of the house.

I used to wear contacts, but haven't for some years (couldn't get my eyes open far enough at 5:30am to put them in!), and haven't tried shooting with them. I can't imagine a downside to it... if you put them in after a strong coffee!

So yep, that's an option as well - would allow "any" safety glasses - opens many more doors (and I am expecting delivery of a new Vice-RX insert for mine today, having changed the prescription for the first time in 4 years).

I have the RANGER's with a bi-focal lens put in. Basically you look through the upper portion for shooting and also have the "reading" portion on the bottom. Great glasses with several interchangeable lens colours. Worth it if you also want a reading lens for close up "bench" work. If you want them for hunting get the PURPLE lens. It really tunes OUT the green foliage and lets you focus on what's in the bush.

I use contacts and have Pillas. Fantastic glasses, there is no comparison out there. They are expensive. I have an astigmatism in both eyes, so, for me in particular, it is difficult to get contacts to fit my eyes well enough that I get the full consistent contact with my eyeball. That can be problematic as the target turns into a fuzzball at times. The only way to tell if the contacts will work for you, if you have an astigmatism, is to try them and shoot a bunch of rounds with them and non-perscription lenses. Most folks that dispense contact lenses can get you a couple of sets for free. You may need to try some different types of contact lenses and various prescriptions to get the right combination for you.

Another point, when getting prescription eye-wear ... You will also need the measurement of the space between your eyes. I think they refer to this as the PD or pupillary distance. Also, remember that all optical dispensing places are not equal. Some are not very good at dispensing shooting glasses.

Google Post4 optics . He's a trapshooter and very knowledgeable . I love mine and they should be in your price range even with the dollar difference.

If your eye sight isnt too shabby, might as well invest in lasix.

Had a buddy who was quote 620 for shoot dedicated specs but yet for his prescription, it would cost 1800 to have lasix. Given only 1200 difference and the change it would make in day to day life, he went with the latter option.

Im in process of getting quotes for myself too.

I looked into this a while ago and found it was way too much money was around 2500. Would be nice but other things take priority.

I wear Smith Optics with the Rx insert. Cost $100 for the glasses with clear, smoked and yellow lenses, $80 for the insert and $100 for the lenses. I picked up a pair of their goggles on sale and I can swap the lenses between the 2. A pair of custom shooting glasses would have been $650. Prices are from about 2 years ago.

I just bought Decots. I bought the ultimate package which has 5 different colour lenses and I LOVE THEM. I mostly use the darker orange one. To keep it in budget you can buy just frames and one shade of lenses. The reason I went with Decots is because the colour lens is the prescription. The problem I have that I found with other brands is they put prescription glasses behind the colour ones and I just don't like that. PLUS Decot makes lenses for Rangers, Ziess and other brands.

After switching from my regular glasses to shooting glasses my score jumped. I really don't know how I shot before without these glasses. I wish I never took this long to buy them.

Hope this helps.

I got Wiley X black ops prescription glasses and while a bit pricey and IMHO quite fugly they are supposedly approved for the US military and have undergone quite a bit of testing.

Lots of testimonials on the web from people who claim their glasses / lenses saved their eye site

I ordered some glasses from Zenni optical as well and they have a lens option that is perfect.

Edit: 1.53 Trivex + Titanium Frames.

Those look really good. I was wondering about the piece behind the lens compared to having the actual lens done.
