preserving velvet antlers

I'll be going deer hunting in early september and would like to know how to preserve velvet antlers?

I talked to Ryan from Orion Taxidermy and one of the most important things he said was to make sure the velvet doesn't get flattened in any spot. And rub them down with slat I think it was, I can't remember the rest but I would contact my local taxidemist for proper instructions.
