I found this ad for an old Mauser and was wondering a few things.

Is the price out to lunch or is this what these go for?
How can I tell if it is the real deal?
It looks like the seller has another one for sale that is a lot less, but I'm not up on all the nuances of the different models.

Thanks,
O.

That price is more on the high end of what a dealer would charge. These things are definitely around and I wouldn't pay that personally.

Looks like a 1908 Brazilian Mauser in 7mm Mauser. The model type plays a big part but what commands the value on the Brazilian 1908s (and other unissued South American Mausers) is the minty, unissued state (which a fair bit were before they were sold off as surplus). Big things are if it is all matching (which apparently it is), if it has the matching bayonet (which apparently it does), and someone correct me if I am wrong there is sometimes also a target and muzzle protector with it (the target being the test one from the factory).

Definitely at the high end of things, but provided it is actually unfired/next to unfired and it is like he says it is, he isn't very far off the mark. Personally if I was in the market for one (which I wouldn't be as these aren't really shooter guns, the value drops pretty quickly when you start doing that), I would make him a offer of 900-1000$ as that would be a comfortable area for me provided it is as he described.

The fortunate thing is these don't really get faked, as there is not much value there to do so, and it is a hard package to fake properly.

Also taking a quick look at the other rifle, it isn't a Mauser it is a Gewehr 1888. Depending on what the Gewehr is (i.e. variation, Turkish capture etc.), really has a great effect on value. Just that one picture doesn't really show much and the price is pretty high for one, especially as I have a feeling it is a average Turkish 1888. Not exactly safe for modern 8x57 (definitely recommended to slug the bore, as some have a .318 bore vs the .323 bore modern 8x57 rifles have), and is definitely a reload only type gun.
