Hi All,

I have an opportunity to obtain a S&W M19 in 357 mag but have no revolver experience. What's one of these worth if in mint condition? What should one look out for when inspecting a potential revolver purchase?

Thanks

This tells you how to check out a used revolver:

I would guess about $700-$800 for a typical nice example of a three screw frame gun in mint condition. This would encompass the Model 19-2 and later models. 19-4s and earlier with the pinned barrel and recessed chambers will command a premium and tend towards the higher end of the price range quoted.

Any of the following would command a substantial premium in the same condition:
-Four screw frame (the fourth screw is in front of the trigger guard)
-Pre-model number (known only as the Combat Magnum)
-Rare configurations

I got mine for $500 shipped off the EE and had been through at least one bump before I went for it. That was a bit less than a year ago. It was in mint condition and had excellent lockup. I've seen mint ones since selling for up to as much as $650 asking but at that price they seem to sit and sit. I'm thinking that 530 to 580 is about right at this point.

I got one recently for $350. It is in very good condition. It is a prohib (2 1/2"), and it is nickel. I know the prohib status will bring the price down, the nickel finish, not sure. People may love that, or not. The only thing wrong with it is a 3mm circular blemish in the nickel, right below the cylinder release. I love the piece. If I had a "carry gun", so to speak, this would be it. I have many others in my possesion that I could choose instead, but wouldn't.
