I have been offered a Schmidt Rubin K31 Carbine and curious if anybody has one to offer some insight on and what are they worth. This one has some minor marks in the wood and the blueing is VG.

Thanks,

How Well Will IT Shoot?

As above IF it is NRA VG or better and is a good shooter around $300 is not too stiff in my opinion. You can easily scope it with a clamp on mount and ammo is accurate. I have one and plan to shoot some IPSC Matches with it IF there are classic targets more than 200 metres away.
Bolt operates FAST and magazine is easily inserted or clip loaded. Main thing is
"shootabilty".
These rifles guaranteed Swiss neutrality in W.W.II and lot of them are made by SIG Neuhausen.

I think basically being of german heritage and assisting the nazi's in hiding loot guranteed their neutrality more than the rifles did.......
These are neat range/target rifles, but would be my last pick for taking into a muddy trench.......

Germany could have taken Switzerland, but the cost was not worth the effort.
Neutrality works both ways, lots of folks bombing the germans would not have survived if Switzerland was not availlable. Sure you are interned, but that beats going down in flames or sitting out the war in a kraut prison camp.

while lots of Swiss bankers were and are pond scum, we also made use of the country for espionage.

Still ya gotta admire a country when a sweet young thing boards a bus with a light machine gun and nobody gives her a second look, and where you not only keep a REAL assault rifle with ammo in your closet, but the guvmint lets you keep it when your military service is over.

That's BS. Read a history book. Switzerland has been a independent country for many hundred years, the Germans were usually our enemies who tried to rule over us, not our friends. So saying we are from "german heritage" is plain not true and offensive.

And yes, the Swiss Banks did hide Nazi gold, that's a fact, but hey, we were surrounded by the Nazis during the whole war and since we don't have any coal, iron or oil in our country, we depended on the germans, who delivered this in return.

Sorry dude, I didn't mean it like that, I know you are the oldest independant democratic nation.
I just meant that you guys speak german, and you look german.......that's all.

Which would make you an US American, since they speak english, too? ;)

But you've got a good point, the K31 isn't battle tested. An experiment would be interesting, maybe I'll do some testing when I get to a outdoor shooting range. Now I just need a K31.

In case anyone forgets, in Europe it was not the German people the rest of the world was in conflict with during WWII, it was National Socialist Party, which was as ruthless in dealing with it own people as those of any other country.
An ideology was the enemy, not the people.

To give ananswer to the question-I am going to guess that in Canada the prices will be higher than in the US even with the exchange rate factored in. here in the People's Republic of California local gun shops have and do carry them from $89.00 to $150.00 in very good or better conditon. the bigger chain stores here have them even cheaper if you want to do some clean up work. Earlier mondels of the famous Schmidt system can run here as high as $450.00 for 1889s, 96/11s, 1911s of the standard types. ammunition sems to be plentiful here even though some US folks seem to think the ammo is expensive or hard to find when it is not in either cae, in my limited experience. Slightly off track Ross rifles ( which I really like ) seem to be less avalable and more expensive in the US than in Canada and there sems to be more interest in them there than here-in my limited experience. Exchange on Currency - Shipping - Taxes- Customs Duties- Brokering Fees- Assorted banking fees- about six months of paperwork, Exporters Fees, etc...............

P.S. Plus most prices in Shotgun News and Dealer Websites are wholesale prices only available to dealers and holders of US C&R Licenses.

Why The Bloody Hell Are Guns So Expensive Here!

Simple economics using law of supply and demand with high barriers to entry, both personally to get into the sport (hobby) and in terms of government sanctioned prohibition using oppressive regulations and border sanctions, which limits practical and inexpensive importing. :)

We have a small population base to start with and an even smaller number of people who go through the highly restrictive process of obtaining a PAL/POL. Add to that the limited number of firearms that have arrived into the country after various government measures to block more, plus the more recent post 911 export regulations by our nearest neighbor, you end up with an ever reducing amount of milsurps available. The real pressure that causes the prices to rise dramatically is the fact that in spite of all these barriers, there are sport enthusiasts and collectors who are willing to pay for quality pieces, which of course drives prices higher.

I think the curve has become exponential and will continue to rise even more in the next few years, particularly if the government moves to ban restricted rifles and pistols. There will be no place for the hobbyist/collector to go except more into non-restricted milsurps, which will exacerbate rising prices once again.

Just my two cents ... ;)

EDIT: BTW, if anyone honestly has for sale really good quality k31's for $250, I'm interested. The operative words here are "really good quality"... :D :D

Badger

Kampfhamster, any idea what the deal would be to export some K-31s from Switzerland?

Hmm, Maybe I'll leave an email/PM for Questar I wonder if they could do a group buy?
