I havent heard back on my applications to take most of my firearms to Florida with me but the have told me that under no circumstances will I be allowed to take my Sterling Mark IV's. So I will give one to my Dad and I'll sell one. Does anybody know what they have been going for lately?

He bought another one? Or scored with his deal? Hell, if you have a Sterling you are the big freeking winner anyway ya slice it! Restricted classy SMG? Yup, that would be a pretty slick piece 'o' Kit.

BTW, why does the USA frown on the Sterling? Is it the CA issue, Assault rifle thing? I am not to versed in their laws and hope someone can enlighten me.

Thanks

The mk4 Police Carbine has two flaws with regard to the US laws.....it fires from the open bolt, which is a big no-go down there for a non-NFA registered gun, and it has a under 16" barrel, which is also not US acceptable.

I'd rather see them stay in the country anyway. There are not enough of them here in the first place.

Additional to the info I gave above, it was due to these rules that Sterling started manufacture of the mk6 and mk7C guns so they could meet the North American market requirements. Sterling also made a closed bolt mk8 but it was not accepted into the US. The mk9 gun (silencer body but with a closed bolt system) was a Cdn special order by Ontario gun. Unfortunately, they all were shown in the gun digest and got banned here in Canada. For whatever reason the mk4 police carbine was missed, and remeains to this day restricted only. All the early (up to mk4) sterlings are considered F/A or C/A, and the mk5 is prohibited because of it's integral silencer. There exists a mk5 police carbine, so if the silencer was gutted and blocked, it is hard to say if they would be allowed in Canada.
In the US it is possible to find the closed bolt versions, usually for a couple grand. Since the tubes are somewhat similar to a sten, guys in the states will also get their stens modified with sterling magwell/components and make stenlings.

If you look at the original Canadian banned list from 1995?ish, it is reflective of what was the original California banned list. Right down to the same make and model numbers, exactly. That list was a ready made shopping bag acceptable for the Liberal gov't of the day. Our 'thinkers' didn't need to actually put any thought into what should be forbidden. That's why we have some (OK more than some) quirks with what is banned and what isn't.

Did California ban the G11? Or was that our doing? Either answer won't surprise me.
I always thought that maybe the mk4PC just wasn't shown in the guns digest that year, and that was how it got saved. But the California explanation has merit too, as the mk4 never really entered into the US, so there would have been no reason to ban it down there.

Yup, it was verbatim the California list:rolleyes: .

I guess we had to hurry up and ban something, might as well go with what was easiest.

Ya, the Mk4 PC was never in the US as a result of ATF making an earlier ruling.

What, you mean I can't have a G11  . I was gonna start reloading for it too!!! :runaway: . That is just straight out the stupidest thing ever put on paper by a politician. I suppose it was so they could get ahead in the race to be politically correct - "we're so anti-gun we've even banned guns that aren't in production" :onCrack:

I only hog the cool guns.:p And WTF exactly is gun snatching? Plus I don't hoard guns...I shoot them!:D And since I seem to be tagged as a gun attention whore, let me leave you with this....

Money talks, bulls**t walks!;)

But on a lighter note, I usually let just about anyone shoot my irons...right Dugy?:D

I hesitate to bring too much attention to the MKIV and as to how it fell through the cracks, lest the situation deteriorate.;)

Suffice to say, they are a gas to shoot and have a huge LCF. They are open bolt, and therefore require appropriate handling procedures...no biggie...did I ever tell you about the time my SKS went full auto at Poco?

If you see me at the range, say hi and try it!:)
