Price difference between 9 & .45?

Not looking to start any arguments here about which is better, or why. This is purely a question about cost.

Why are .45's always more expensive than the 9's and 40's (in the same model of gun)?

I'm looking at the M&P's, and there's at least a $50 dollar difference between the 9's and 45's.

Why does it cost an extra 50 bucks for a .45 when the frame/slide is the same on a nine? Is a .45 barrel really that much more expensive?

1 - supply & demand
2 - the price that the market will bear
3 - the cost in raw materials & tooling

Actually, no they're not. The frame and slide of the .45 version of the M&P (as well as pretty much any other pistol) is larger. The exception would be a pistol that is normally available in .45 but is also available in 9mm, such as the 1911.

$50 is nothing when you compare cost of retail ammunition differences (9 vs 45)... I thought that's what would be discussed
