Price of .338 Lapua Ammo

unfortunatly no where local! theres a few spots way out back in shawni you can get to and do around 900 yds, and we're scouting a place out soooke way that we are figureing might hit 1000, need to range find it yet.

so as far as i know, unless you dont mind heading way upisland, or off the island, there isnt much for 1000+ shooting

and u know what they say about assuming :p

Like others I have thought about a .338LM but decided against not because of cost ( I can waste $ with the best of them LOL ! ) but because I am limited by the distance I can shoot out to. If you have less than, say, 750m to play with on a regular basis you are best off sticking to .308 and .300 wm IMO.

Yeah, I assumed :D you were going up island, off in the bush somewhere, but was hoping against hope there actually was something closer (aside from Douglas St., that is).

I normally shoot at NSRG, but we only have 100yrds there, and that's not very taxing on my 6mmBR.

Thanks for the info. You confirmed my suspicions that I'll have to go out and find a spot in the bush as well.

Must have been quite the commitment to buy 500 of the same projectile. I've got 6 different boxes of bullets for my 223, going to test them all lol!

I think if I had a 338, I'd be more interested in using Lapua bullets, but that's just me.

If I were to get into 338, I would first need a easily accesable range with at least 600 yards, and even then it wouldnt be worth the investment unless I could really entertain myself and shoot out to a mile. Assuming I had this, which I don't, I'd go balls out, sell every firearm I own and get something custom from ATRS and spend close to $10,000 on the rifle and scope. Then try to find some 1F brass and used dies lol.

I did alot of testing with different powders but really only two bullets. I tested with the 250gn GMK's and the 300gn SMK's. The 250 were early on in the life of the barrel and I think one of the biggest problems I had getting them to group was that the barrel was too new, haden't be shot enough. The 300's grouped much better and once I found a load I figuered that the 300's were the bullet i'd be firing the most so that's why I bought 500. I'm gonna do some more testing with the 250's since the barrel is settled in now that the rifle has about 300 rounds through it.

Make sure you bring water with you when you hit the logging roads, I had a prett fail experience looking for a place to shoot on the back roads...

Good advice. Been there, driving back from Caracol in Belize. Low on gas, 5 people, 1 bottle of Grape Fanta, middle of the jungle, starting to get dark....

Very dumb, in hindsight. Incredible place, though.

i had a 110 ba for a while, shot a few coyoter with it, maybe put a hundred rounds through it. i was very happy to get rid of it, i didn't enjoy the thought of the money it was costing me every time i pulled the trigger. i'm currently working on another long range bomber using the 300wm. Guys are getting the high bc 225 hornady and 230 berger up to 2800 fps. all components are affordable, $34 for the hornady's at p and d!

It's all about enjoying it!

Shooting .338LM is a lot like paying $3k + for a non-restricted black rifle. You got to WANT to have it.

I reload for my .338LM so cost isn' t that big a deal. Is it a rifle I shoot a lot no, not compared to my other precision rigs. Do I regret it? Not one bit! There's nothing quite like squeezing off a round in one of these big boys.

I will eventually have a .50 too. Do I need it? No but need is not the question. The enjoyment and the HUGE sh*t eating grin it puts on my face makes it all worthwhile.

Regards,

Boomer686 has it right. You have to want this round to be able to enjoy it. If you sit at home and calculate the cost of shooting this thing compared to a .308 or .300WM or whatever you will never own one. But if you want to shoot, and own, and have fun with a .338 Lapua Magnum, then you just have to jump in, both feet first into the deep end and go for it. Buy your rifle, get your dies, get your components and get started. You will enjoy it!

It all depends on your idea of "expensive". I stepped up to the Lapua and really enjoy the performance it offers. I love my 308 and 300WM as well, but making 1st shot hits past 1000 yards in the wind is much easier with the Lapua. I find I only need to fire 1 or 2, maybe 3 rounds on target to feel "satisfied". I use my 308 for practice and sold my 300WM.

.338 lapua is a cheap entry level into the 50 caliber class.
I doubt any trophy big game will ever be shot with it... Its just a toy for people who like to brag about nothing but their own circus show.

You guys know Im only kidding,... right?.:p
