This article caught my eye this morning. I'm glad I've got a decent ceterfire stash. But you have to wonder how long the cheap target shotshells will last.

London Metal Exchange hits a new high, and the outlook is for even greater gains
Daniel Magnowski
Thursday, October 11, 2007

LONDON — Lead hit a new high in early business at the London Metal Exchange on Thursday, supported by a tight supply outlook combined with strong demand from battery makers, analysts said.

The metal has outperformed other LME contracts, and indeed most other assets, with gains of 130 per cent since the start of the year.

By 10:30 (GMT), lead for delivery in three months traded up to $3,890 (U.S.) per tonne on electronic dealing system Select, surpassing its previous peak of $3,885, which it struck on Tuesday.

Despite these high prices, users of the metal have little choice but to continue buying, analysts said.

Andy:

I occasionally get a bucket from tire shops as well, here in Alberta, but more and more and purifying and reselling to dealers, and as such the supply is drying up. If I may ask how much are you paying pre bucket. I usually get mine in 5 gallon buckets and paid $30/bucket last time I got some and considered that a good deal.

Thanks for your time.

I have two spots I hit every month and pay $15/5 gal at one place and $20/5 gal at the other. There's a small place I hit every six months for $20.

I am already hearing words to the effect that "prices are going up", and may well have to pay more soon. I'm going next week, so will see. I fear that if I miss a month and someone else gets in there, I will be supplanted, and am prepared for the "we are now selling to the wheelweight supplier (or a recycler)" story, hence the stockpiling.

That having been said, I'd pay $30 for a 5 gal bucket that was relatively clean (no oil, grease or water and a minimum of trash).

Update - lost one of the two spots to a local recycler who pays $40/5 gal. :( I would have had to at least match and probably beat that price and that was no dice for me.

The other spot is still mine (got about 3 gal this morning), but I think I'll pre-empt them going elsewhere by paying more next time without them having to ask for it.

You gotta take care of your suppliers.

I think that is wise, because at even $25-$30 its is still a really great deal, and slipping payment into a thankyou card once a year or so, may not be a bad idea either.

Just my 2 cents.

regards and all the best
