My wife came back from a supply run at Hummason's today and the three bags she picked up were $38 a bag, I was kind of surprised. :confused: Anybody buy shot from Lawry's this week? Curious if his has gone up as well. :(
 
I know, lead shot isn't the most economical thing to ship. Back in October I think, shot was $30 bucks a bag, then it crept up to $31, then $35 now $38. These prices are usually the same at the two places that are the cheapest in the country by the sounds of it. Hummason's, which makes it in Ancaster and Lawry's in Caledonia that imports Lawrence magnum shot. I just checked the price of lead and it's $1.22/lb. That's $30.50 in raw materials for a bag, then you have the cost of making it into shot and the profit margin of course.
 
Our local shops are picking it up themselves once or twice a year at Hummasons, which is probably a 4-5 hour trip and $50-80 in gas. I havent seen the other brands around here, except the imported stuff up at Bass Pro, for a lot more $.
 
Where is around here? Bass Pro has their head in the clouds if they expect anyone to pay $69 dollars a bag for chilled shot and $79 a bag for Magnum shot. No wonder the writing on the bags there has worn off from handling and sitting on the shelf so long. I wonder if they've sold a single bag...

God I know. I've often thought of buying one as I have a ton of contacts in the auto business for cheap or free wheel-weights. My only concern is lead poisoning, obviously. I think I would have to dress up in an Ebola suit for my wife to be ok with the whole thing. But something intrigues me about making 800lbs of shot in an afternoon and potentially making money selling it at the club for a modest profit. Hell, just making my personal shooting cheap would be worth it to me if I could eliminate the negative health effects. :)
 
I don't think lead exposure from casting is that bad at all. If you're ventiated and not putting it or dirty hands, exposed food etc in your mouth I don't think its much of an issue. Blood level tests for those doing it a lot can confirm this.

It seems most people that end up with problems from lead usually are high volume indoor shooters. This lead inhaled from the Lead Styphnate primer mixtures used in most brands.
 
I read the same info you've obviously read on the subject. I believe the science part of it, like the fact that lead fumes don't begin to be airborne and pose a risk until you boil it. You'd never boil it as it's melting point is way lower (621oF vs 3180oF!!). I've just witnessed the nerve damage my grandmother has experienced from long term lead exposure through her lead water pipes in the house. Not a fun experience and the only real reason I'm gunshy about it. If I came up with a system of protective clothing that limited my exposure through contact with the raw ingots and went the extra mile of a correct rated respirator I might feel comfortable doing it. My fears are mostly irrational, I know, but real nonetheless.
 
Last year I paid $49 for a 20# bag at Wholesale and thought that was bad. This year I see a couple of retailers selling a 20# bag for $79!!! Yikes

Yeah, I spoke with Rick Lawry on Sunday at the club and he explained that he had a few bags of lead at $34 in 8's and 9's left but they'd be gone Monday or Tuesday. After that, the next load (which is apparently going to be West Coast) would be at $40 a bag. He told me Top Guns are going to stay for a while at $49.99. Hardly seems worth reloading 12ga at those prices. :( Makes me wish I had bought those tubes and loader in 28 when I had the chance....
