I have a small worry that MD are going to catch flack simply because they cannot organize students, scouts whatever to work the match. Everybody will show and be expecting not to work. I think it could be an excellent idea for level three matches, could add the extra $10 to match fees, but then were back at the origional argument, who sees the value in hiring workers?
I would say patching is a great way to pass the time... I think at matches that require you to be there for 4 days 2 work (dedicated patchers) and 2 days to compete or half days... if a match director wants to charge 10,20,30 40 whatever so you can opt out that option is for the Match director and host club to decide. RM's C/RO's score keepers could be given a discount for their effort. IF the cost is high enough to opt out there won't be alot of takers but if if there are a lot of takers the MD should make sure there is a pool of workers who would be willing to work the event "IF needed" before making that an option to competitors.
If not, like you said, it will cause such havoc that no one will ever offer it again... there just needs to be one match to determine if it was a success or not ... worth it or not and can make reconmendations based on that event to continue or not... I think it's a worthwhile suggestion and could help out at larger events for both the competitors and local kids and host club if done properly.
