Pricing Help - Marlin Safety 44-40

Picked this up in a trade for my boat, trying to figure out what it's worth. The serial # seems to indicate it's from 1889, it's been well used but still in good shape and perfect working condition. It's listed as 44 W (44-40), says Marlin Safety, no other markings.

Serial # 29388

Would love to confirm the model, Model 1889 would be my guess based on the serial #

Also curious about the value, hoping to sell in here on EE

44-40 is a cool old western days caliber!....:)

One problem I can see is factory ammunition is almost non-existent and expensive when one is lucky enough to find any......:(

I wonder if a gunsmith could cut and rechamber to 44 Special?

Otherwise it's a beautiful wall hanger still in 44-40.
 
When looking them up I didn't find many in 44-40, I got half a box of ammo with it, had no idea that was hard to find ammo
 
44-40 is a great calibre
It is available as factory ammo but ya it’s hard to find and expensive when you do find it
Fortunately it’s an easy enough round to reload just have to go slow so you don’t crush the case neck as it’s thin
Got a couple 44-40s myself I would keep the rifle as is
 
Serial # would have helped my Wag here. Condition of the metal/barrel/ rifling would be my major concern. What it does have going for it is it looks like a special order- 3/4 tube mag and what looks like upgraded wood that needs some tlc.
Asking 1K isn’t unreasonable and possibly will find a buyer, just not from me based on the metal condition.

No patent marking at all, just the marlin safety as pictured, caliber on the barrel and serial #
 
Marlins 92’s offerings came in .22rimfire as well as the .32 with both firing pins for cf or rf. The .22 is actually valued a little better as probably somewhere over the last 100-120 years one of the firing pins was lost.

If you can get $1000.00 for a rifle that has no bluing left, one can't find ammo, and is finicky to reload, take your grand and run, run very fast!......:) LOL

There should be a 1000 Win 92 clone "flip-cartridge" owners trying to sell their new rifles to acquire this controlled round feed rifle.
and I think it is a model 89'from the photo.

44-40 was impossible to find for several years actually.
I ran a gun shop for close to four years, I bought from eleven different distributors, during that time frame, no one had 44-40 ammunition available.
Now because two places have them and with ridiculous prices, doesn’t make the 44-40 easy to find!…:) LOL
