Primer Deactivation

Back when I started reloading I was cautioned against "handling" primers as the oil on your skin could contaminate/ruin primers. What did I know? and didn't want to hear "click" when hunting. Years later I find out (accurate reloading site) that now primers have a protective coating so no worries about handling them. I wish I could link to Saeed's post on his experiments because it is interesting how much primers will withstand.

That would be an interesting experiment.

I've got some 40 year old primers that could be compared to new primers.

I have a Dillon RF100 and one of the primer tubes has a few primers stuck/jammed in it. I was contemplating soaking the tube with WD40 for a couple of weeks before trying to remove the primers.

I think I'll call Dillon now and just get a replacement tube from them. I wouldn't be surprise me if they give it to me at no cost. Regardless of cost, it's not worth the risk of an injury.
 
So for all you folks the deactivate your primers by firing an empty case, how loud is the sound? Cap gun loud or just a small pop? I've got a few that I'd like to get rid of, but I live in a condo. I just don't want the neighbors calling the police and having the tactical team bust down my door.

Loud enough to need ear protection if you shoot it off inside.

My daughter used to compete in percussion muzzle loader matches. Would dry fire in the basement with a magnum cap to cause/cure a flinch. Could easily hear it outside.

It is loud enough you prob don't want to do that.
 
If you hold a sock over the muzzle, its less than a cap gun. Nobody would think about it in the next suite. Even without, the neighbors would just think it sounded like a slap of something on the floor. I just did it, it was loud but nothing that would draw attention. If you are gonna do more than one, the sock trick will make it nearly silent

But yeah, just an open muzzle, its solid cap gun loud
