Thought you guys might find this interesting. I was depriming some old dominion brass today and noticed that the LP primers are made a little different in them.

Primer on the left is what came out of the Dominion brass, on the right, I think, is one of the new (also <eye roll>) Dominion primers that CanadaAmmo imported from Russia. (Not that Federal or Winchester are different, just don't have any handy to show)

One can definitely see the similarity with the berdan flash holes in the old primer...

Actually, the older CIL [Dominion] primers were all boxer type, and those small holes you see were simply the design of the anvil in those primers.

They were very good primers, and I still have a few in 8½ [LR] and 8½M [LRMagnum]

The new"Dominion" primers have no similarity nor any relationship with the old style. The same name is strictly coincidental.

Regards, Dave.

I'm not always clear in what I say - I tend to think faster than I can talk or type ;) <sigh>

Yes, I know all that :) Dominion - Dominion, no relation.

I only meant to say "Hey, old primers, cool engineering design! Never seen that before!"

The only relationship I wonder about is whether the similarity in design of the anvil in the old primers to the berdan flash holes is accidental.

Since the offset flash holes are in the berdan brass itself and not the primers, I'd say there is no relationship....

The old boxer primer just uses a solid anvil with a pierced hole, new ones use an anvil with 3 open areas, only difference you are seeing is a different shaped boxer anvil. It's still boxer brass.

I was playing around with the macro settings on my camera and took these pics of CCI small pistol primers vs the Dominion. Interestingly it looks like the CCI uses a small yellow wad of cloth like material, whereas the Dominion uses a pink paste material.
