Well, I was in the process of priming some brass in .45 ACP.... somehow the primer got jammed in on 90 degree angle into the primer packet while using a lee ram prime. I now cannot remove the shell from the shell holder as the miss aligned primer is binding up against the holder....

Any suggestions??

This has happened to me a couple times, I suggest dropping some oil into the casing thus neutralizing the primer, and then ram the s**t out of it into the primer pocket, be careful on this part.

After that, the primer shouldn't lock up on the shellholder and the casing should be free to remove.

Just had the same thing hapen to me with my Hornady hand primer. I just emptied the rest of the primers out of the tray and pushed out the mangled primer with a Lee case length gauge. I've got pretty strong hands (mechanic) and the thing was pretty much crushed and barely recognizable. I'm surprised it didn't go off when it got jammed into the pocket. They're surprisingly stable until you give them a sharp blow.

I am put some real hurt on some federal primers with this Lee hand primer problem, never had one go off. I really try not to tempt fate though.

Same thing happened with mine. I managed to get the shell holder out though. I had a big vice and I clamped the holder into and fitted a large socket over top of it. I placed a long robertson drill bit (6") in the socket sitting on the primer.

I hit the bit with a sledge hammer (for the long handle, not the force ;)). Short story long, it was non-spectacular, the primer was pushed out into the shell sideways and did not go off. (wear safety goggles) Problem solved.

The other thing I thought about doing was to put it in the camp fire and wait for it to burn off and then fish out the holder and smash the hell out of it :D

There must be more than me who have had many a primer go sideways in a case? They don't go off with a push in my experience.

When i first started using my Hornady hand prime tool, i'd get going to fast and put one in side ways now and then when doing large batches. After carefully pushing it back out after neutralizing it once or twice, i finally took one outside and crushed the liveing #$% out of it till i could remove the case. No bang, hmmm. I then deliberatly started 10 sideways and crushed them flush into the case, no bang.... Unless you give them a mother of a wack (sharp and fast, i can't with a hand primer tool) they don't seem to want to go off. Saftey glasses are always a good idea, but its a primer, not half a stick of TNT...Same goes for pushing them back out with a decap/size die, have yet to have one go off. Maybe if i flung the ram up i could, but i figure i'd be more likely to bust the de cap pin. And even then the base of the cartride/primer would vent down the ram.

CCI primers done on a Lee Pro 1000. I didn't even know I did them until I was checking all the finished rounds.

Correct me if I am wrong, but is a detonation less likely on a sideways primer because of the way the anvil is situated?

You will de OK to decap a live primer just use common sense and do it slowly. Also NEVER trust oil to neutralize a primer. I have learned from experience.
