primer jamming trigger mech

Was out with a couple buddies shooting an AR and the rifle had a failure to fire. Popped it open and a primer was stuck under the trigger mech! We were using crappy norinco ammo but this is the second time I've seen this happen. Is this something that happens often? If so, I can totally understand why the name Kalashnikov is still quite popular.

Yes, because a primer loose under the trigger of an AK series rifle wouldn't cause any physical obstruction. Must be the rifle, and not the cheap crap ammunition you were using. Primers should not fall out of fired cases.

This is the second time I've seen this happen and was not impressed with the ammo or the lack of designing that went into the rifle. Milling out a section under the trigger mech would fix it, but when you pay an arm and a leg for something reliability should be part of the package. I've fired thousands of rounds through AK's and they always went bang when you pulled the trigger.

All a milled section would do is allow foreign matter into the AR.

I have seen a LOT of IVI 5.56mm down rnage and never seen this happen in an issue gun with issue ammo.

I have seen this in reloads or crap ammo. End of story.

If it makes you feel better I have 2 norinco AKs (5.56mm) here at the range, and both of them pierce primers with fair regularity often resulting in primers or parts of primers getting into the bolt and jamming it. Stupid AKs all they needed to do was...

Oh, wait, maybe if both the gun and ammo are in spec the problems don't happen.

I've recently had a primer jam between the chamber wall and a partly chambered round in my shorty. I was using IMI ball M193 surplus ammo.

#### happens.

I shoot C77 by the thousands and never had a primer blow out in any of my AR's.

Both C77 and M193 primers appear to be crimped in the same fashion.

Part of the reliability of the AK series has a lot to do with the ammunition as well...Most of the ammo available for the AK in surplus is steel casing rounds.

Have you ever seen what an AK does to brass casings?...I have...The casing jams against the lower portion of the feed ramp and gets bent downward...mainly because it can for the fact that it is soft brass rather than harder steel.

AK's too are only reliable with the correct ammunition, and I have seen many fail to feed because of brass ammo and a feed ramp that was not ground down or modified for them.

I once had a jam with a Norinco SKS: a small brass "confetti" from a primer had lodged in the locking lug recess and prevented the bolt from closing fully. It was just enough to prevent the trigger from tripping.
Upon dismantling, we found that the firing pin's end was way too square and sharp and acted like a cookie cutter on the primers' soft brass.
A few revolution in a press drill to round the tip just a bit with a small sharpening stone and it was A-OK.
PP.
