What sort of priming system is preferred? I would prefer something that is a separate piece of equipment from the press. I already own a RCBS hand primer.

I like the Lee priming tools, others don't. One is kept set up for small primers, another for large.

I've used one of these Lee priming tools for about thirty years. Fast, reliable, and cheap. You can feel each primer seat, and you don't have to touch a primer with your hands.
Dump the primers in the tray, shake until they all flip over, put the cover on, and your in business.
The only downfall, is they need their own shell holders.

+1. Fast and easy and you can do it watching television.

I prefer the RCBS bench mounted priming tool. I've used hand priming tools, but with the exception of the old Lee model with the screw in shell holders, which allowed you to precisely control the depth the primer was seated, I found that it was more difficult to obtain consistent seating depths than with the bench mounted tool. Uniforming primer pockets is worthwhile regardless of which priming tool you choose.

There is a shellholder kit available that has shellholders for most of the common calibers in a nice plastic case. But yes, they are different from regular shellholders.

I've got the Lee hand held primer tools but a couple of years ago I bought the RCBS hand held APS primer tool and now prefer using it to the Lee tools.I think it is much faster and that I have a better "feel" for seating the primer.

I have used the Lee style hand primer for several decades, and always liked it. I also own the RCBS hand primer, and it also works fine + it uses standard shellholders. Still can recommend the Lee units. They are pretty well foolproof, and I can always feel the primer bottom in the pocket. Regards, Eagleye.

Another vote for the LEE handheld. I actually wore one out, bought an RCBS, set it aside, and bought another LEE.

While the RCBS primed alright, it was a hateful thing to change back and forth from large to small primers.

Hi Boomer. What sort of bench mounted tool is it?

I prime on my Rockchucker because it allows me to do two things at once, I bell my cases on the upstroke and seat the primer on the down stroke. If I don't have to bell case mouths, I sit in front of the T.V. and prime with a Lee hand press, with primer attachment and it uses regular shellholders, I believe Lyman and others make these ram prime attachments.
