primer question-newb

I've been looking into re loading and hope to get into it soon. Most information I read so far makes sense. One thing I am surprised about is how they classify primer sizes. The description of small pistol, large pistol, small rifle etc leaves me not 100% sure which primer to use. Who defines what a small rifle or a large rifle/primer is? Like how do I know what primer to use on a 30-06? What about an 8mm mauser. Is there not some specific chart to confirm this. I have to admit that my information so far has come from online sources. Do most re loading manuals (of course I will get one before starting) provide that information?
Thanks

Ok so more questions. I'm getting ready to re load some 8mm mauser ammo. I have about 100 pcs of Brass mixed Remington /Federal. I bought the 9th edition Hornady manual. I also bought 1lb of IMR4064 and 100 PRVI 175 grain 8mm PSP BT bullets.. Now do I have to follow the Hornady manual reloading data to the nth degree?

Here's the closest I can get from their manual for IMR4064.

170 grain bullet (170 gr. Interlock RN (mine are 175)
41.1 gr at 2200 (starting load)
Now they don't mention what primers to use but can I use whatever large rifle primer I can find (these days)?
I know there are a lot of other manuals out there and they try to promote their products, understandably, but I just want to make sure that when my gun goes bang it happens at the muzzle instead of the receiver end. Am I too paranoid?

use what ever brand of primer, hodgdon's loading site has 175gr data, but 5 gr's in bullet weight won't make a difference. i persoanlly would start at 41gr oh 4064 and work my way up.
