I've always used federal small pistol primers but now I can't seem to find anyone with some in stock. If I change to a CCI or something, do I need to retest my load ? Or will all primers (magnums excluded) produce the same bang.

Thanks

It is recommended to do new load development if you're near minimum or maximum loads, just to help avoid pressure spikes or pierced primers or other issues. Not all primers are made equal, some have notorious batches of thin cups.

However, I have heard decent reviews of Canada Ammo's Dominion primers(rebranded Murom) that are generally rated as being equivalent to Winchester standard. Plus you can usually grab them for quite cheaper than some other brands.

At almost $10 cheaper than CCI, I may be switching over to Dominion primers as well. I bought a box to see if they feed properly in my LNL AP.

Unless your at or over max loads I don't think I would change my loads if just switching primers. It is of course good practice to do so, but what's the fun in that.

According to feedback I received from Winchester, years ago, you can switch standard primers without any issue. Win standards are supposed to be the hottest, of the group. If you ever change to a magnum primer you need to back off on your load because it does without a doubt create a spike in pressure. You won't have to back off much but you still need to if your running at max load. Safety is always first in any reloading .
