Primer seating problem

This is my first time reloading and ive read the abc of reloading and ive followed all the proper steps and procedures.
Im using a lee 50th anniversary kit.
Im loading 22-250 shells and was given cci 400 small primers.
The problem im having is the ram will not push primer far enough into shell and the primer holder doesnt adjust to raise the primer higher.
Also when i just place primer in a shell it looks like primers are to small when i compare it to a factory load.
Am i missing something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Are the primers falling out after you seat them ? If not, you fave the right primers, the common error is to fit large primers in small primer holes as the other way around would be pretty obvious when the primer drops. Personally , I invested in a hand priming tool and seeing you don't have a progressive press or a turret press then it will make things easier.
I have the exact same kit and never bothered priming on the press for a single stage , much faster with the hand tool as I don't do large volumes.
 
CCI 400 primers are Small Rifle Primers, for cases like the .223.
CCI 200 primers are Large Rifle Primers; primers this size are what you should be using in your .22-250 brass. There are other makes as well.

OK, you are new to reloading, everyone has to start somewhere.
But you really need to stop, go back to the very beginning, and make sure you understand how to proceed.
What you were trying to do wasn't dangerous, but it just wasn't going to work. Other mistakes can be dangerous, and you really want to avoid these. You were using the wrong primers. Use the wrong powder and really bad things can happen.
 
Ok that makes sense that i have wrong primers.
I asked the guy at the store for powder recommendations for both 22-250 and 223 and said i need primers as well.
He gave me a box of small primers.
No wonder when i compared a factory reload to my small primers that something didnt seem right.
 
H335 will work in the 22-250, but I think varget, or H4895, or H380 would be a better choice in the 22-250. If i had to pick one powder for both 223 and 22-250 it would he H4895, personally.
