Primer thickness?

Hey guys just sussin how thick a Primers bottom end is?

Reason I ask is im getting a shiny spot on the primers when I close the bolt.... So im guessing the Remington primers are sittin out a bees #### more (photos to come) than the standards, ive been hunting a couple times an put the same bullet in the chamber, an close the bolt... so the shiney part is most the ways around the primer now... just wondering what the dangers of this are? it isn't a bur on my bolt, its just pressing up against it when I close....

weirdish, I clean primer pockets out with a little tool an do a reasonably exaggerated twist an clean etc.

So this is just chambered once an shot... imagine chambering it a few times an the mark being almost right round the primer

Does it happen when you just chamber the round?

What are you seating your primers with?

Only rem brand primers?

Regardless, it won't hurt anything as your are not reusing the primer, but you may not being seating them deep enough. Have you had any light strikes?
 
Hi guys, Its only appeared with these rem primers and my handloads, every other brand of factory was fine and no marks were left.

I checked out the bolt face an without getting a photo, it looks basically very normal an feels very flat, although theres a Gold ring on just around the firing pin hole...
The primers are seated on a Lee press where I do my depriming an bullet seating, all one set up..

Im not reeeal worried about it, just didn't want to be chambering the same round an maybe have it go off??

Yes even without firing it marks the primer, ill reload some an do a good job of cleanin the pockets and see how it is, although im fairly confident they are clean...

Interesting article, scanned through regarding primer dimensions.. Maybe it does have something to do with the way im cleanin the primers pocket out..
Will look into it!

You might try reaming the primer pockets a bit, so the primers sit in the pocket a bit deeper. Even just squaring up the primer pocket base a touch will help (especially with Winchester brass, which is punched and pressed in large volumes, not machined). Upside is that you also get clean primer pockets ...

You're welcome. I definitely recommend using the thicker cup primers any time you're working with higher pressure cartridges or 'hot' reloads.
 
One of these sites may help. I have a dimension list but I cannot cut and paste here.

The table shows a cup, sides and bottom thickness of 0.27" for CCI, Federal, Remington, and Winchester, all large rifle primers..
