I need some advice, I'm starting to reload 454. I'm having a great deal of trouble finding magnum small rifle primers, can I get away with just using standard small rifle primers? I'll be loading between 29-32 grains of H-110. I've read some conflicting info about what primer to use.

Thanks, Andrew.

"...magnum small rifle primers..." Magnum primers have nothing whatever to do with the name of the cartridge. They're about the powder used and nothing more.

I realize that and I"ve always been told to use magnum primers when using H-110/W296. However it is nearly impossible to find magnum small rifle primers as only CCI makes them, #450's I believe.

I think that only applies when you're using pistol primers. Rifle primers are already hotter so I don't believe you need to use rifle Magnum.

I personally use. CCI BR-4's

With H110.

That may be another option, I've loaded some up with small rifle primers and I'll see how they work out.

What I don't get is why they had to design the 454 Casull with small primers, it's parent case, the 45 Colt uses large primers and the 454 Casull is the parent case to the S&W 460 mag which uses large primers as well.
