What difference, pressure wise; will the use of a magnum primer over standard exert?
I'm looking to figure out a load for my 41 colt. I need to bump up the hollow base 200 gr. slug into the rifling. I was going go with 3.5 gr of Unique.
Will the use of a magnum primer cause a dangerous pressure spike; even with a minimal loading of Unique?
Or will it help bump up the hollow base a bit?
 
Unique is easy to light, so with a light powder charge in a small cartridge like the .41 Colt, I would use a standard primer. If you aren't getting enough obturation to form a gas seal, try switching to Bullseye or get some softer bullets. That said, you won't hurt anything by using magnum primers.
 
My testing over the years has been that a magnum primer will increase the presure level They are not needed on fast burning powders with small amounts in small cases. Where they work well is on the larger cases with the slow burning powders. 3.5 grains of Unique in a 41 colt case should not need a magnum primer unless maybe you are going to use it in 30 below weather.
