I need an opinion. A fellow I know has approx 5000 large rifle magnum primers that he will sell me cheap. could they be used if one very carefully worked up a load for a .44 mag. as in minimum or less than starting loads, you know the drill.

I think most people will tell you it's theoretically possible but not recommended as rifle primers are taller than pistol primers, will protrude from the case and, especially in a revolver, might cause some problems, namely cylinder binding.

I've used magnum rifle primers in my 44 mag Ruger Redhawk loads many times. It's never made a difference over using large pistol primers.

I have stated on various threads on CGNs that I have interchanged primers on various calibres. I have never noticed any difference in pressure, or anything else, regardless what the brand of primer or whether it was standard or magnum.

The primers are exactly the same size the only set back is that rifle primers are harder. I bought rifle primers for one of my Smith and Wessons once and I had to tighten the spring in the grip. Go for it.
