For those who are looking at the huge priced primers, at the Edm gun show, there were 200,000 primers for sale. Large & small rifle/mag large&small were $35/1000. Target primers were more. Primers at shops should be available soom :). I got 5000 each LR & LRM. No more $50+. (CCI)

For me I'm good. 5000+ CCI LR BR's, 6000+ CCI SR BR's. Another 1000+ LR Winchesters. I still scratch my head how many members here cannot get primers. Still any part of reloading that costs 5c or less one cannot complain.

WSS is pricing standard primers at +- $40 p/1000. That is the highest it has ever been there.

I know some of the smaller stores were raping customers ($50) when WSS was still selling them at $32 p/1000; granted, it was when they had any available.

Some are still raping... just go in the EE ammo/reloading forum, in the 1st page there's primers there for $50/1000 and it's not BR primers!!

Six months ago, I had 10,000 small pistol primers ( CCI 500 ) shipped from B.C. to Nfld, coast to coast, for $45/1000 to my doorstep. I should have Visa'ed more.

They hit $50/1000  ?????
OMFG !!!!!
Glad I stocked up to the teeth when I could get them for $28/1000

What prices are the various stores charging for 1000 large rifle or large magnum rifle primers NOW ??????

Most of my current stock was bought at less than $25/k although I do have some small pistol I bought 2 years ago for $28. I'm pretty sure the new standard price will bottom out around $30ish. The days of buying 5K taxes in for $125 are over I think.

Unless we get a really good deal from a site sponsor,.......(nudge, nudge, wink, wink):D;)

Just picked up a case of Remington small pistol primers last week here in Whitehorse at $169.57 for 5000 including tax,or it works out to $33.91 for 1000 with tax.Not bad for way up north!

WSS in Edm had none & some of the smaller shops were throwing the screws to customers. A phone call around is quite interesting.

Since we are one of the smaller shops (by comparision to WSS) I should comment on this. Our current retail price for most primers are $47/1000. We don't raise or lower our price depending on what WSS is charging or has in stock. We base our retail price on what we have to pay...shipment by shipment. We buy from distributors across Canada and have open orders with most of them as I write this. Stores like WSS buy direct from Winchester, ATK, Remington ect. while we buy from distributors. WSS obviously buys for less and with the same mark up as us can sometimes sell for less. This model works well when supplies are prevelant but when the supply chain slows down or stops for a while (they bring them in large infrequent shipments) I have the ability to refresh my inventory faster and from more regional sources and thus almost always have some inventory even while they are out of stock. Hope that helps understanding the differences in prices. Phil.

Good post, Phil.

I'm trying to supply my local shooters in NS, like you - I had to go t many different sources just to find some and with many varying prices and varying overhead costs to get them. My latest supply is coming literally from the other end of the country - being trucked 6500 KM to me.

All I can say is please don't think some of these dealers are screwing you. In most cases, they're like Phil and me - trying to put some on the shelf at any cost. If you don't like the price, you can always show it by not purchasing.

you have to watch out for WSS's prices now, I wanted shotshells in Aug,basspro was 6.00 a box cheaper on 3-1/2" ww expert steel. Been a lot of changes going on at WSS lately in the management area.Hopefully it'll improve again. But, UFA has acquired Sportsman's whs in western USA, so,and opened a few new stores, I suppose they will have to pay for it somehow.

Hey Phil, I understand the wholesale/distributor situation faced by small stores. It has happened in most industries and I feel bad for the small stores that have to compete with "wholesale" type chain stores. However, I think that what a number of posters have commented on, is what I witnessed re: primers a couple years ago.

One of the big stores was selling primers at $27/1000. A small store was selling the same primers for $33/1000. When the big store ran out, the price of the remaining stock at the small store jumped to $50/1000 two days later, and no, it was not a "new shipment at a higher price".

It has happened more then once at a few small stores (not all) and is a bone of contention for customers when they know they are being screwed without lube.

While I don't like the fact that we're paying more for primers and other components as consumers we can lay a lot of that at our own door. We rush off to support the big box stores to save a couple pennies, all the while #####ing and complaining about poor services and lack of knowledgeable staff. Mean while the smaller stores stock sits on their shelves gathering dust until all the deals are gone. Then we piss and moan because they raise their prices to stay afloat and pay their bills. I suspect that if we would have supported the little guy a bit better we would have a lot more choices of where to shop and a better selection at the few mom and pop stores left. All I see the big box stores doing is eliminating the competition and then we will really get taken to the cleaners. I like a deal as much as the next guy but we can't always have our cake and eat it to.
