Primers

While I don't like the fact that we're paying more for primers and other components as consumers we can lay a lot of that at our own door. We rush off to support the big box stores to save a couple pennies, all the while #####ing and complaining about poor services and lack of knowledgeable staff. Mean while the smaller stores stock sits on their shelves gathering dust until all the deals are gone. Then we piss and moan because they raise their prices to stay afloat and pay their bills. I suspect that if we would have supported the little guy a bit better we would have a lot more choices of where to shop and a better selection at the few mom and pop stores left. All I see the big box stores doing is eliminating the competition and then we will really get taken to the cleaners. I like a deal as much as the next guy but we can't always have our cake and eat it to.

Well said!I support our local store here in Whitehorse as much as i can,and when i need an item i know i cant get in the Yukon i deal with the local stores in other parts of Canada, like P&d and Freedom ventures. That way i know i'm dealing with people that know what they are talking about and the service and info is real.Hard to get that at a box/chain store.

There are only 2 places locally to buy Primers..... The cheapest is $7.69/100 for LRP.... Match or BR primers are $10+/100.

Compare this to the $29/K I bought LR & SRM for 6 months ago (and I Sh*t myself then) I'm glad I bought when I did...... Of course I'm gonna be looking for primers by Christmas.....

Cheers!

Hey Phil, I understand the wholesale/distributor situation faced by small stores. It has happened in most industries and I feel bad for the small stores that have to compete with "wholesale" type chain stores. However, I think that what a number of posters have commented on, is what I witnessed re: primers a couple years ago.

One of the big stores was selling primers at $27/1000. A small store was selling the same primers for $33/1000. When the big store ran out, the price of the remaining stock at the small store jumped to $50/1000 two days later, and no, it was not a "new shipment at a higher price".

It has happened more then once at a few small stores (not all) and is a bone of contention for customers when they know they are being screwed without lube.
Good point, I'm sure this has happened more than once in our industry and other industries as well. It's called supply and demand and taking advantage of the low supply... high demand. There is a huge temptation to do this by anyone in business and also individuals who find themselves in possession of products or services that few people can deliver. We see this at the gun shows, EE and other trading places when the supply is cut off and someone tries to take advantage of the situation. In the case of businesses this can be a fatal mistake because people have long memories and yes they may pay the price now but when things improve in the future they will not support that business with these predatory practices. I hope we are never seen as doing this as that is not our style of business. Phil.

Hey Phil, how is that fudge treating you?? LOL... I hope everyone knows you run an honest business. Tough times are hard to deal with for everyone.

Just bought a case of federal small pistol primers from P&D yesterday. Paid $47. +tax. Seemed high but as stated at least there were some there. WSS has had none for a while now. Hate paying that much but ya gotta support those who support us.

Cheers

As of yesterday WSS had primers. I bought 1000 CCI 350 (all they would sell me...) and I saw a box of federal and some Winchester. Those Federal boxes are about 3x bigger than they need to be.

Federal primers have a reputation of being overly "sensitive". Perhaps they need the extra packaging for shipping safely.

I like P&D I go there for primers and powder because they have it in stock :D I stop in at the UFA in RedDeer too when I want powder.

If I find primers at less the $40 anywhere else I buy a box or 2, $35/1000 at the gunshow I picked up 2000 I really don't see the need to buy tens of thousands of primers when I only use a few thousand or so a year.

I think I'm sitting good with about 2 years worth of primers and powder in stock. :D

I also like to support our local store, but last friday I went ot TNT in Regina with whom I've deal with for years & spend untold amounts of $$ .
Their price on Fed 205m & remington was $7.79/100 limit of 200,Berger 224 80gr match bullets $80/100.
needless to say this is nothing but Rape & pillage as far as I'm concerned they are commiting suicide & if they go down in flames won't feel sorry for Darrel & company--enuf is enuf!!:(

That's just nuts. Might as well go to someplace like Wally World, buy factory ammo, pull the bullets and reload to your own specs. At least you'd be getting some brass out of the deal.

I agree that isn't what we as consumers should be supporting!!!! What I was trying to say is we have shot ourselves in the foot by supporting the big box stores to the exclusion of the decent local guy. We have a number of sponsors here at CGN that give great service and as competitive pricing as they can, and still stay in business. Those are the folks we need to support or they won't be around long. As Phil from P&D points out his prices have increased and the time and effort they need to put in just to find product is likely increasing, that comes with an increased cost as well. Let's support those guys and keep them around even if it cost a couple extra cents per round. But hey if we can always say no if we don't like the price and then live with the consequences, guys like Darrel get to live with them as well but somehow never seem to go down in flames.

I stop in @ TNT just about every day..... I spend a bunch of money there.

According to Darryl, his mark up on Primers & components is about 20 points. So don`t start throwing any stones his way, he`s just trying to keep stock on his shelves like eveybody else.

Now if you stop frequently and buy stuff you get a bit of a discount on the sticker price (I take full advantage).... What makes you think he would give every joe-blow off the street the same treatment, most guys stop in once or twice a year.

If you find a better price on the Inter-web or WSS, Darryl is willing to match the prices he can. I personally have only been told on one occasion that "I can't match that". I've yet to have a problem with warrenty service, even on firearms he didn't sell me.

IMHO Darryl & co. are a real boon to the firearms industry, they will treat you the same way you treat them..... What more can you ask?

Cheers!

$80 for Berger .224 80's is almost double what they should be, that my friend is called screwing your customers.

Supporting smaller stores is something I try to do, but when a store pulls crap like that we are not losing anything special if they go out of business. If they were charging $60, say 20% more then the other guys, maybe, but come on.

Well his customers must be treating him real bad then.

You guys never thought to haggle?

Heck... If I can haggle Futureshop over a DVD player...

(Mind you, that hasn't gone well before for me with one of our sponsors. In retrospect, it was my on fault. :D)

The fudge was suppose to be for customers but I can't help myself (more next Saturday). We have always tried to keep the hard to inventory items like bullets, brass, primers in stock but because there are so many different SKU's and variable demand it makes it tough to keep everything on the shelf. We are usually at our lowest inventory point this time of year and are about to place our major component and ammuntion order for the following year (Dianne and I worked at home writting up orders during the weekend trying to anticipate demand and volume because if we don't order it now we may not get any this year). Phil.

Well, buying more primers can be a great investment considering what the present cost of primers are, and what the cost/availability might be in the future...I do shoot a lot and have about 44,000 primers(small/large pistol) in stock, and i`ve never paid more than $30/1000....:p
