Hi Folks,

I've worked out a really accurate load for my 30-06 using 180 gn Sierra Pro-Hunters and RL-17. Muzzle vel is approx. 2830 fps. Primarily, this would be my deer load.

Is this bullet too soft to use in Moose and Elk?

I could work up another load if necessary, it's just that this particular rifle seems to really like the Sierras. Not so much the Noslers or Hornadys.

Thanks

Fat

I use pro-hunters in my 7mm-08 for deer. I usually load TSX's for moose/elk, but based on my results with the sierra on deer( all DRT, no recovered bullets yet, mind you all shots are under 100yds) I wouldn't hesitate to use one for a boiler room shot on a moose or elk. Just don't try and use it to break the shoulders.

an 06/180 will take down almost anything in north america- just you need to do your part- 150 is a "typical " deer load, and you're into heavy deer( mulie) moose, elk and bear terreitory with what you're currently using-

It would work, but there are so many better choices...tsx is my first choice on big animals. I personally wouldn't shoot anything I cared about with a sierra bullet of any kind, they are very frangible.

If you insist on using a cup and core bullet on moose my experience are that speer hotcores and Hornady Interlock spirepoints are better. Using a Tsx or Partition bullet only adds $2-3 to the cost of the hunt, practise with the Sierra's kill with the TSX.

Sounds like a great load for Moose and Elk!!

I use a hot core 180 grain hot point on a 308 for everything. Though it wasn't huge, that includes a moose, and elk. They worked well, and I'll keep using them.

I prefer to do exactly the opposite. Practice with exactly what I hunt with, then hunt with it. I use my hunting load in service and precision competition often, as well as just general range time.

The .308-180 PH holds together fairly well up to about 3000 fps. Higher than 3000 fps it tends to over-expand and come apart. It's a good 30-06 moose bullet.
