Prob with 1911 slide not releasing when pulled back

Having a problem with my STI Trojan in 9mm. When the slide is locked back and I insert a fresh mag, I like to pull back on the slide to release it and chamber a round. My problem is the slide is staying in the locked back position (as if the mag has just emptied) when I pull it. The only way to chamber a round is for me to use the slide release which is working fine. It does this with STI mags and Willson Combat, I tried both.

Both mags and and pulling the slide back to chamber a round work perfectly in my Norinco NP29. Anyone have any Ideas as to why my 1911 is doing this?

Do you have a shok-buffer in it? If so take it out.

Recon wad nailed it...looks like you don't have enough backward travel to release the slide stop...hope it's that simple...like you...I prefer to rack and load not just hit the stop....

if no show buff, maybe the recoil spring is a touch too long, which would have the same effect, or too deep of a detent on the slide stop?

If the slide release isn't falling it might be time to clean all around it. Or it might be time to oil all around it.

Use the slide release, that's what it's there for. Don't get into the habit of pulling back the slide.

While I definitely agree that the slide release is the most efficient way of reloading from slide lock, the slide should still release by pulling back on it. The reduced slide travel has the potential to compromise function; Les Baer Commanches are notorious for this (though their 5" guns are quite good). I would start by removing the Shok-Buff if one is installed.

Shok Buffers Grrrrrrrr...... I'll try to be nice this time......The best place for Shok Buffers is in the garbage can or left in the store!

Use the slide release, that's what it's there for. Don't get into the habit of pulling back the slide.

I got 2 1911's with shock buffers installed. And both still release when I pull back the slide.

Because the slide release was part of a design for 1 handed operation. Also it is slower to use 2 hands to release the slide, inefficient in competitions. Thirdly, most people that pull it back to release the slide also have a tendancy to keep hold of the slide therefore allowing the slide to return to battery slower, and giving it a chance of feeding issues.

so why cause problems?

If you have a proper lenghth and weight spring, a shok buffer shouldn't be needed. After shooting 20 years of IPSC amd hundreds of thousands of rounds never needed one.

Shok Buffs are good for shooters that fire 1000s of rounds for practice like IPSC shooter. Maybe remove the Shok Buffs for competition only.

Took the buffer out and tried with some snap caps in the mags. Works like a charm now. Thanks everyone for the help.
