I'm trying to get the finish off my Norc SKS stock.

I'm using Poly Strippa and some steel wool, and its doing jack s***.

Is there an easier way to do this?

Circa 1850 should do the trick, try the heavy duty stuff.

It won't harm the wood grain and it doesn't require any clean up of the wood before you stain it or finish it.

If all else fails: 'Easy Off' oven cleaner.
 
I believe they're coated with some kind of varnish. However, you need to give the solvent time to work. Put the Poly-strippa on and leave it for 15 minutes(or whatever it says on the can). Then scrape off the finish with a flat putty knife and repeat as required.
 
i used circa 1850 with steel wool on my sks stock before , i was happy with it so today i tried it on my cz858 wood HGs and it works great , took most of the black stain that was there , little bit of of light palm sanding , it looks superb. a spray can from homedepot is $4.50 .
 
I've used the gooey poly strippa and circa 1850 and they both work well. I think they're pretty much the same thing.

I don't like using the steel wool though. I just use a cheap paintbrush and paint a thick coat of the stuff on. Wait a few minutes and use a metal scraper to scrape it off. If you're careful the scraper won't damage the wood.
 
If you are on a budget[ SKS'ers are cheapskates]get some 'easy off' oven cleaner, and it will bubble up, all the crud and varnish.Don't get any on the metal parts or it will lift the paint and bluing.Wear gloves and glasses.[Very caustic stuff]:dancingbanana:
