Probably going to buy Marlin 1895 GBL...best bet for 45-70 ammo?

Tagged for interest.

I'm thinking I'll be buying a 45-70 in the next year or so. The new Marlins look much nicer than the Internet Experts would make you believe and since I can't afford a High Wall or No. 1 this is will be me soon. Seems nobody is questioning the choice of the GBL, that's good to see.

It seems counter-intuitive that penetration increases with slower speeds. Would this be explained by less forces acting on the bullet to tear it apart at lower speeds?

How would the recoil compare to a 308?

It's not only counter intuitive... it is counter physics... all else being equal (ie. bullet staying together at both speeds in question)... don't believe this poppycock...

I loaded up 420 crater lites and 550 grain craters to close to max. Recoil is too much to blast away sitting at the range, but I'm fine using it standing is no problem.

Any more than 20 rounds at the range and my shoulder is done.

i saw that Cabelas has the 430 gr HSM now - has anyone tried these? Personally I prefer expanding bullets...

What did they cost per box? I've been wanting to try an alternative to the lever-evolutions, which is all i can seem to find in Calgary.

And friend of mine just picked up 5 boxes of it. He says it's pretty stout. I doubt it's worse than some of the skookum handloads that some of us run (my personal loads run a 418gr bullet at 1950FPS) but a damn sight stronger than the wimpy factory ammo and with sufficient bullet mass to penetrate deeply.

You've done this with them? Where do you get a hold of them? I see there in the states and don't seem to show shipping to Canada.

Jae Bok Young will ship his 420 grain crater lites and 550grain craters to canada. The 550 is a monster that resembles a AA Duracell. I mainly run the 420 grain crater lights over 50 grains of h4198 in Winchester brass and Cci 200 primers. But as soon as I get more 550s I will load them up to about 1500-1600 fps and call it a day.

I hate to be blunt, but with big bores like the 45-70, you don't need an expanding bullet. I know it's hard to get away from that mentality when coming from anything .338 and under. But TRUST me, a WFN or LFN profile hard cast lead bullet will drop any animal and does not need to expand. The wide flat meplat cuts a 45 caliber whole through the animal from end to end and you would not believe the blood trail. The other issue with expanding bullets is the fact that they need to be driven faster to reliably expand, which in turn causes more meat damage. Not so with cast bullets. Push any moderately heavy cast bullet(400-550gr) to 1500-1600fps and you wind up with a dead animal with no meat damage. Its a hard concept to grasp, but heavier and slower is better in this cartridge.
