Happy New Year CGN’ers

This may not be the right forum for this question, but can anyone say if it’s legal to bring back to Canada from the USA items such as a Les Tam M1907 sling, and or a Schuster gas plug. Do these count as gun parts and require importing docs? Thanks

Gun parts are fine so long as value is less than $500, no?

Assuming nothing illegal in Canada.

Gun parts are regulated in the US for export under ITAR. Bringing them into Canada is not the issue so long as they aren't prohibited. Getting them "out" of the USofA on you personally is the problem ie export permit on OEMs parts that are registered under ITAR.

Gun parts under $500US is from an ITAR registered exporter eg Brownells, not you bringing them across the border in your car or suitcase.

Do they ID you for parts?

it doesn't matter if they ID you. If it is not legal for non US citizens to purchase firearms/parts/accessories in person , in stores, wether they ID (card) you or not is irrelevant , it's still a crime. A great many firearms related items in the US are not licensed for export and that would be hard to know at point of sale. (gun show, retail outlet or person to person sale)

Now, I'm not saying it is a crime..... I was more or less wondering if it is. It's been years since I crossed the border to go shopping but in my younger days, trips to the surplus stores and hunting/fishing shops in blaine , linden and everet were a regular thing for me and my friends. I recall a decade ago or so there were changes in the US that made it illegal for us to shop in person stateside for parts and accessories and canadians were being flagged and inspected , tracked by thier license plate.
I dunno.... I just shop via brownells or a licensed export/import outfit when i need stuff from the states. That way I know that the items in question are licensed for export and no one is going to be getting hassled.

Just got a tear in my eye remembering monthly pilgrimages to Kesselrings.

This is a little off of OP original topic but still interesting.
Gun parts are regulated in the US for export under ITAR, and that is not of question.

What is of interest is that Licensed manufacturers, importers, and dealers must conduct a background check for the transfer of all firearms subject to the GCA.

Canadian citizen residing in the United States need an alien number or admission number to purchase a firearm from a licensed manufacturer, importer and dealer.

However, unlicensed private sellers are exempted from having to complete the background check process. Commonly, such unlicensed sellers operate from gun shows or flea markets, although a licensed dealer selling from a show would have to run the background check.
