Problem with brand new .308 cases

P51 - I agree with your comments. In fact, I had a similar ram issue hitting the bench with a press installation. The point I was making was that his long brass (referring to the shoulder) will be ok after he fires it. It will extract just fine.

But the press still will need relocating.

I understand Ganderite the problem is when neck sizing only and with a snug cartridge fit in the chamber many people forget to grease the locking lugs to prevent wear.

At Milsurps in the Enfield forum I was once talking about how I preferred tight headspace on the Enfield and I got a polite email from Peter Laidler the Senior armourer in the UK. He politely told me that the Armourers were told to never under headspace meaning looser headspace and head clearance reduced lug wear and bolt thrust on the Enfield rifle. (the cartridge case was the sacrificial component and not the rifle)

Bottom line, there is nothing wrong with a snug fitting cartridge case but make sure you grease the locking lugs. At Accurate Shooter.com you will also read many articles where they grease their lugs on their costly rifles to protect the lugs.

P51 - Did you read post #2?

It is wise to put a dab of grease on rifle locking lugs each time you clean. especially so if the bolt or action is stainless steel. It seems to be more prone to galling.

A handy way to package some grease for your range kit is in a empty small glue stick tube. I buy a package of glue sticks at the dollar store, throw out the glue and put grease in the tubes. The tubes do not leak.
