Problem with Brownells order

I tried ordering some 1911 parts from Brownells but received an email requesting an import license. Can someone tell me which of the items I ordered require an import license and where I can find these parts in Canada?

Perhaps it is the total price versus any one item requiring an import licence.

I've had no probs getting grips... always kept the total Gun Parts below the $ limit.

The stones and wrench are not gun parts. everything else is. and if the total price on the order (which is what the law goes go by) is over $100, you'll need an import license. if you want to split your order into as many parts as you need to keep each order under $100, you can avoid getting a permit - but then you'll have to pay shipping on each order. and if one part is over $100, you'll need the permit anyway, so you might as well keep them as one order in that case.
 
I thought it was $500 now for Canadians, at least at e-gunparts.com. That does not apply to specific parts like "Assault" Weapons, NFA items, frames, bbls, bolts, etc..

All orders over $100 or that contain a restricted part must be mailed to us with an import license from your government and we would license this shipment with our U.S. State Dept. There will be an additional $35 license processing fee. (Note: Canada has a $500 parts limit)


Postage for all foreign orders is based on weight and destination.


All foreign orders are subject to a minimum $5.00 export handling fee.


Due to licensing requirements, foreign orders often require more than the normal 24-48 hr processing time. Normal processing time for orders requiring licensing is between 4-6 weeks.


Certain parts are restricted for export by the United States Government. Barrels, barrel blanks, bolt assembly and cylinders, receivers, frames, bolts, and high capacity magazines-magazines over 10 rounds but below 20 may require an import license for the country of destination. Magazines 20 rounds and larger are only for military, government and police agencies and require an end user certificate. Additionally, certain models are also restricted. This might just be a Brownells thing. My .02$
 
I think it's the mags as, according to ITAR, they are required for the pistol to function (even though you can load rounds through the ejection port but explain that to the US guys making the policies).
 
"...require an import license..." None. It's a U.S. export licence that's giving you the grief. Take out the assorted stones. You're paying a premium for stuff that just says 'gunsmith tool' on it. You don't need special stones/honing tools for anything firearm related.
"...thought it was $500 now..." It is according to Gunparts. Mind you, like all governments everywhere they don't tell anybody anything.
Contacting Brownell's is the best idea though.
 
I have ordered mags and grips from Brownells in the last few weeks. I had to do it in three seperate orders so they were under the $100 limit but there was no problem with either of those comodities
 
I ordered mags and assorted other small parts on Monday, the total was 95 bucks after shipping charges, had no problems and the order was shipped on Tuesday, just waiting for it to arrive:D
 
I emailed Brownells to find out what the problem is, they have not emailed me back yet. It looks like it is the $100 dollar limit, I found this on the Foreign Affairs and International Trade website.

Q4. I want to buy parts in the US for my firearm and import them into Canada.

A4. The US controls on the export of firearms extends to parts also. For small orders worth less than US$100.00 the US Department of State allows an exemption from the export licence. This exemption, however, does not cover ‘significant’ parts which includes; barrels, slides, cylinders, bolts, frames and receivers. It should be noted that there is no equivalent exemption offered by the Department of Commerce for shotgun parts. Further, there is no exemption for ammunition or ammunition components. Canadian importers should follow the procedure outlined in Q1 (above) to import parts not exempted.


I don’t want to pay three times the shipping! Is there anywhere in Canada I can order this stuff? I would rather buy from Canada anyway.

Did you phone in the first order or was it done online?
Give them a call and talk to a nice friendly sales person...you will have your parts in no time!:)
 
It is the $100 limit. None of those items are prohibited or require an import license. I have ordered MANY times from Brownells. Just need to keep your orders under $100. STUPID law.

Maybe, maybe not. There is some confusion about this. Brownells observes the $100 limit, Numrich refers to a $500 limit on their website. One of the Cdn. importing dealers offered an expalantion not too long ago. Apparently it is for certain commodities, for certain licenced exporters.
