problem with new Ruger GP100

Have you stripped, cleaned and lubed the revolver? I'll bet no. The same thing happened to mine and I found a bunch of crud in the cylinder crane arm thingy (brainfart). Tear it down clean it and lube it with Remoil or the like and you'll be GTG for quite a while...I haven't been back into my GP100 since the initial time, and I shoot a fair bit with it. (both .38 and .357) 50/50.
Aside from the good cleaning everyone is recommanding, I would also check to see if the gap between the cylinder and barrel isn't too tight. As they break in a lot of these guns develop a bit of cylinder end shake and if the gap is too tight you end up with a cylinder that rubs on the barrel when it's being rotated and it tends to jam things up. Look at the front of you cylinder for rub marks.
Also check for dirt under the extractor, that's a spot that's often overlooked and a few grains of unburned powder in there is all that's needed to create headspace problems on a tight gun.

It worked fine because you switched to another make of ammo. Sellier&Bellot makes good rifle ammo and maybe 9mm as well, but their revolver caliber ammo is not the greatest in my experience.
I can guarantee you, if you stick to any of the North American made ammo, it will always work flawless, and this for a very long time.
I have mine for 30 years now and it still looks and performs as it did the day I got it.

? Mine eats any ammo...provided it's clean. I think the cylinder resistance was filth, not jamming due to out of spec ammo. (which S&B is not, I've never had a problem with the European stuff)
