Problem with safety on CQ556

I have a Norinco CQ556 and recently changed the pistol grip to a Magpul one.

After I changed the grip I was checking the functionality and fit and feel of the rifle and noticed that the safety switch will not stay engaged.

When I flip it from "semi" to "safe" it just flops back to semi. If I hold the switch on safe I can't pull the trigger, but like I said as soon as I let go of the switch it goes back to semi.

I thought the problem might have something to do with the new pistol grip so I put the old one back on, but it didn't fix the problem. I also tightened the screw in the side of the safety switch, and that didn't work either.

The gun functioned flawlessly before and I had no problems with it at the range.

Any input is appreciated.

Sounds like you may have lost the spring and detent that hold it in position when you removed the grip. It is held in place by the grip and most likely dropped out when you removed the original one.

Be sure to search the area where you added/removed the pistol grip on your carbine. You may just be able to find it.

yeah i took a look as soon as I read the responses but didn't find anything.

ill keep my eye out though.

Well, it is very small. More than likely won't cost too much. Check Brownells or Questar for the detent spring.

As long as you have the spring you 'could' make the detent out of a small nail cut and filed to shape....if you had to. That spring needs to be careful placed when the grip goes on, or spring it goes and it make no sound.

good news........ I was able to find both the pin and spring after some careful combing of the floor.

My AR is once again working perfectly. Thanks to everyone who helped out

Good thing you did!

Now you don't have to wait for the stupid spring to arrive before you can fire your rifle again.

that is good to hear. next time dont forget to do any mods on you gun over a clean work table. so you wont have the prolbem of trying to find missing parts

No, No! Gunsmithing must be done over a shag carpet! Or in a room with as many cluttered corners as possible.

Those little stainless steel pans with a magnet in the base can be useful.
