problem with Stoeger p-350

A friend of mine is having problems with his Stoeger pump shotgun model p-350 . When he chambers a 3 1/2 in round the slide is not locking in place...as soon as he fires the slide goes to the rear by itself and even with 2 3/4 in shells the slide wont lock into place.

My Benelli Nova does the same, when the cases are spent, there is no need to keep the bolt locked, the action half opens by itself making ejection fast and easy. All the P-350 I tried does the same, as they're based on the Nova.
He just have to learn to cycle the action that way.
 
I agree that after the round has been fired there is no reason that the bolt should stay locked but I do not think that the action should open any amount without the pump handle being pulled back. Just curious, but I would like to hear from other owners of the nova/350.
 
I have a Stoeger P350. My action stays locked with a round chambered... until fired, or the action release is pushed.

Maybe his action release is engaged/broken?

Does it lock without a round chambered? If the gun is new, maybe the slide is just stiff and he is not using enough force when chambering a round.
 
Update....the action will lock if there is no round chambered but as soon as he tries it with a round it wont lock in place.

Well, now that's a totally different story. Did he try different makes / lots of ammo? The first thing I would personally check is the headspace (shotgun shells headspaces on the rim).
Since it locks without a round in the chamber, it is likely a headspace problem, too small or the shell rims being too thick, but since the rims are quite soft, it"s rareley a big problem.
 
Yes thats how they work. Would not make sense to have to find the small action release after each shot.


Like Baribal said probably ammo. Or he's just not "pumping" it hard enough. (I know...thats what she said)
 
Thanks for the help , I am not sure if it is a new shotgun and I will tell him to have the headspace checked .

Yes, there is an easy way to check the headspace but for that you will need headspace gauges.... If the the headspace is thight, you will need a GO gauge and if it's large, you'll need a NO GO gauge... but if I was you / him, i'd start by contacting Stoeger first...
Anyways, you wont be able to fix a shotgun headspace problem by yourself... and still, if it's the problem...
