problems getting grip tape to stick

hello all,
I bought some skateboard grip tape.
I attempted to apply it to my M&P and surely the tape wouldn't stick.
Is there a trick? heating up, applying glue etc?

Any help would be appreciated!

Is the tape sticky to the touch? Will it stick to other surfaces other than your gun? Have you cleaned your gun and made sure that it is free of all oils and waxes? Naptha would take care of this for you.

Guns are oily, tape does not stick well with oil around. Let us know how you make out.
 
Using rubbing alcohol to clean the surface and make sure you don't touch it again with bare hands since you'll just put skin oils back on the surface. Heat it up a bit as you apply it as it helps it wrap around rounded surfaces.
 
I build skate boards and can tell you that grip tape is super sticky. Not too sure why it's not taking to the gun. But I would do as Skoal suggested. Heat might help with shaping it to the contours. Once you've applied it use the backing to protect the gritty surface while you smooth it. Much easier on the hands, and you can use a smoothing tool without wrecking the tape.
 
I got a roll of Grizzly tape from Amazon. I tried it but the grip tape fell off in a few days of use. Then I bought a roll of Black Diamond real industrial grip tape (for stairs and ladder not skateboard) and this one is super sticky and there is no sign of them coming off after 2 months. So the grip tape you get makes a difference. Grizzly stuff suppose to be good I just don't know why the one I got sucks so badly. I will re-order the Black Diamond again from now on.
 
Black Diamond is much better. I've noticed that A TON of different brands of tape have lacking in the adhesive department as of late. I'll tell you this! I sure as hell ain't gonna buy any of the Duck brand sh!t ever again! Purchased maximum strength (a little scale on the side indicated to me it was max) and I'm not kidding? I've had fvcking MASKING TAPE that had a better adhesive than that sh!t hands down. Absolutely sad and pathetic. I've never seen duct tape so bad that even Uncle Red wouldn't touch it with a 39 1/2 foot pole but..... I made the mistake of buying that sh!t and boy was I pissed.

What a joke that stuff was. Doesn't even qualify as "tape" if it doesn't stick.
 
Get some grip tape that's really sticky, like from a skate shop, they should sell it by the foot or have some scraps lying around they might give you. Clean your M&P thoroughly till you think it's clean, then clean it again for good measure. I start with hoppes9, then 99% iso rubbing alcohol then windex, then a final iso wipe. The only place I couldn't get grip tape to stick on my M&P9 was the back of the grip, over the backstrap as it's more of a rubbery compound. No issues on the slide, beaver tail, trigger guard or frame. Cleaning solvents will slowly break down the glue on the tape and you have to replace it now and then.
 
Method I used on my M&P:
1) make sure the grip is absolutely free of any dirt or oils.
2) pre-warm both the pistol and the skateboard tape, this softens the tape / adhesive and makes it easier to conform to curves.
3) apply the tape, heat a little more and smooth out any wrinkles.
4) wrap tightly with paracord or similar material. Allow to cool.
