Problems painting a GSG 1911

I picked up a second hand GSG 1911 and would like to paint it but am concerned about the serial number; it seems to be really shallowly edged into the slide. I am worried about painting over it and not being able to read the serial number on the gun. Has anyone encountered this? Any suggestions?

The serial number that needs to be visible is the one on the frame. The slide number is not required by law. It does help to ensure that the frame & the slide match though.

I thought I needed both, it is the same problem though. The number on the frame is just as shallow.
