So I took it out to the range for the second time yesterday to shoot trap. The stock is on my 870 12g. I bought it used but almost brand new. Anyways after about 20 rounds the stock wouldn't fully return back after each shot. I.e. the stock was stuck covering the trigger and trigger guard. I had to bang it pretty hard to get it to return back to it's resting position. After a bit the stock became loose. I said enough and stopped shooting. I took it home and tightened it the best that I could and oiled it. Do you think that is all that is needed? I would hate for it to malfunction like that when I was hunting or in a competition.

I hadn't oiled it but the previous owner may have. It was snowing pretty hard and water undoubtedly got in there. I don't know if that was it. I have heard of oil causing problem in cold weather before. Is there a certain type of oil that is good for cold weather?
Mine has come loose a couple of times when it was first on, I just retightened it. I have since taken it off and put the fixed stock back on (not my cup of tea) so I can't say if it is a recurring issue or not.

mine was and I think that might be why, I did not try it without to confirm so it might not be the cause.
I just have to pull on the pistol grip to bring it back, I don't even need to change position, but it gets aggravating...

I don't have a sling plate on it. I oiled it up and tightened it. I went to the range today and no problems. I guess it just needs to be periodically oiled and tightened, no biggie. The other problem I encountered is that I can't shoot trap worth crap with it.
It could be my choke or my sights or just me. Do any of you guys use the 870 Express for trap shooting? Also do you know what choke it comes stock with?

Your probably right about the rearward position but mine was getting stuck in the forward position as the spring compresses and the sliding portion covers the trigger and trigger guard. That's fixed for now.
To clarify about the barrel, it's a 28" ribbed barrel with removable choke. I couldn't get it off to check it out. But I assume it is not right for shooting trap. Although, my skills have a big part to play in it. I shot 50 rounds and maybe hit 3 clays. I have done better with an 11-87 hitting like 2-3/5 and that was my first time shooting trap. Today was maybe my 5th time.
I'm considering putting a second bead on the barrel as well. Can others please share what setup they have on an 870 Express for trap shooting. Pics would be great.

Mine would stick when it was new....sprayed it with some gun oil and then worked the action by resting the muzzle on a foam pad while I compressed the spring with my body weight about 100 times!
I did this a couple of times and it doesn't stick any more....just needs to "break in".

A number of people on this board experienced similar issues with various root causes. One of them is that because of the variances in trigger guard width, the portion of the pistol grip who slide over and get stuck there(ie the trigger guard got jammed).
Check to see if that is also the case with you. You may need some polishing or sanding on the inside.
