I have a mod 490 Winchester and I’m having issues with it breaking off cocking (handles 2 now) the first lasted about 1000rnds the second only last about 500 the gun was un fired when I got it so it is a relatively low round count. Every thing looks good internally with no obvious problems the bolt stop seams fine strong spring. The action does foul up bad could this be the problem? I clean it up after every shoot but after about 250 rnds it fairly gummed up maybe I need to clean it out in the field? I shoot stingers mostly could they be too strong for this model?

Any thoughts?

ammo

Were it my gun, I would fix it and then shoot the next 1000 rounds with just high velocity ammo, like American Eagle or something of that nature. Stingers were not available when a lot of older guns were new and most of them cannot handle the added punch of the stinger ammo. Just my 02. Later.

I call foul on the 490 not being able to handle Stingers, because mine certainly could. And that included 11 years with all kinds of ammo use in South Saskatchewan.
There was no problem with any 22 ammo, im my experiences.

Maybe the cocking handle is beating itself to death on a opening to the receiver being to short in the front?
Check for front and back clearances there, between the cocking handle and the receiver opening?

Good luck Cohod.....
