Could someone tell me what the process is for buying a new gun? I am new at this, just did all my testing for the PAL and RPAL, waiting for all the paper work to come in. I was wondering if I wanted to head to a place like Bass Pro to buy a shotgun I would require my PAL card and that’s it? Is there a lot of paper work to fill out and forms to send in the mail?? How does it all work?

Thanks

It'd help to know where you are about as the rules are diff B-tween provinces. In general - you get the PAL/RPAL and then just pay for the gun and give them your PAL #, they do the rest and then you get your toy.

If you're buying a non-restricted firearm:

- let them see your PAL (and possibly another piece of ID, depending on the store)
- pay them
- they will do most of the paperwork, while you'll sign a couple of signatures
- they will give you a temporary registration certificate for the firearm (the official registration will be mailed to you in about 2 weeks)
- and then you can walk out of the store with your new gun

If you're buying a restricted firearm:

- you must be a member of a shooting range/club
- apply for an ATT (see other articles on how to fill out the application properly)
- after you get your ATT in the mail, then you can go pick out and buy a restricted firearm
- let them see your PAL (and possibly another piece of ID, depending on the store)
- pay them
- they will do most of the paperwork, while you'll sign a couple of signatures
- then you have to go home empty-handed; you must now wait for official approval of the transfer of the restricted firearm from the store to you
- when the transfer has been approved, the store will contact you and provide give you an ATT for the transport of the gun from the store to your home
- now you're finally allowed to take the restricted firearm home with you (BUT DON'T FORGET YOU MUST HAVE A LOCKABLE CASE AND A TRIGGER LOCK)

this is the gist of it, probably not worded perfectly though

Bass pro won't show you anything without your PAL, at least thats the way they are in Ontario.

Crosswind pretty much laid out all the information you need.

Modified for Saskatchewan...

- they will do some paperwork
- they will make a phone call and get transfer approved and a STATT faxed over to the store.
- CFO will fax or email a temporary copy of an ATT to you until the original copy comes in the mail with the registration and transfer documents
- take the restricted firearm home with you (BUT DON'T FORGET YOU MUST HAVE A LOCKABLE CASE AND A TRIGGER LOCK)

STATT= Short Term Authorization To Transport
ATT= Authorization To Transport

The process is fairly painless for non-restricted. Just show up, choose your gun, show your PAL, and give them your place of birth. They do the rest. Buying online is even more pain-less.
I'm not sure about restricted since I only have my PAL.

Waiting for your paperwork to come is the biggest time issue, I have known people that have waited 6 weeks to receive their PAL after they mailed it out with their photo and fee. but once you have it, it only takes a couple minutes to registrar A Firearm in your name.

Just to give you a time-frame, I sent all my paperwork in for my PAL on Dec 23 2009, received it on Feb 9 2010. They didnt' contact either of my references either.

1)sit down with wife, try to bring up the topic of a new purchase
2)get a sturn talking to, with her giving in after a handful of of promises
3)Buy firearm
4)Work like a slave in the house
5)back to number 1

Thats my process

LOL, you got that right! I bought 2 new restricteds last week, you don't even want to know the amount of begging, pleading and promises that took! :p

in regards to the bold part of the quote, is this just a requirement for bass pro shop? all store front shops? the same requirements for purchasing online? say marstars?

or is being a member of a shooting club just a basspro shop thing?

My wife and I both got restricteds tranferred to us without a membership. We weren't even the process of joining a club at that time.

Some provinces require that you be a member of a shooting club and have a LTATT before purchasing a restricted firearm. In Ontario you do not need to be a member of a shooting club before you buy one. But you will need to be one in order to take it anywhere to use it.

Thanks BigGuy for the info. I was starting get worried, and think that I was misinformed by my instructor.

I have my Restricted, and just took my Handgun Safety Course, and have a Club all picked out , but I dont have a Handgun yet. I was planning on trying out different guns and do some wheeling and dealing until I found the right first handgun for myself. Then I was going to get a club membership when I was all really. The instructor I had for the handgun safety course told me its no problem to just get a LTATT when I buy my first handgun, and get it to my house. I already talked to one of the guys in charge at the Gun CLub, and he said to me once I have my handgun, he will sign my application paper for the Club Membership and sign the ATT Paper, then I will be all set.

I was starting to be worried, because I have read a few things saying that you NEED to be a Club Member FIRST. I have a deal worked out for a Handgun from a fellow CGN member, but I dont belong to a club right now.

You do not get a LTATT until you join a club. They will get one for you. What you can get is a short term ATT that allows you to purchase a restricted and get it home.
