So i decided to start on a semi tactical and will do a progression thread here.

The original gun is a used Remington 11-87 Super Magnum in 3.5 inch. I realize that this gun has some issues cycling light trap loads, however this is to be corrected using the S&J Hardware RRS.

The reason for going with the Super Mag over the DA Cougar that i also have is that i want the longer mag tube that i can use because of the 3.5 inch chamber.

At this point the majority of the parts have been ordered and are in the mail.

Remington 11-87 Super Magnum 28 in
-Barrel will be brought down to flush with the magazine extension (between 20 and 21 inch)

Fab Defence folding pistol grip stock

S&J hardware Bobcat Forend

S&J Hardware short top rail
S&J Hardware Magazine follower
S&J Hardware and Elite Tactical Advantage Recoil Reallocation System
S&J Hardware charging handle
+3 magazine extender (will allow 5 round of 3.5 in the tube)

More pictures to follow as the build comes together

Sounds like a nice setup.

However, you might want to check with someone (gunsmith maybe) whom has experience on cutting down gas operate shotgun barrel because the gun might not cycle properly without enlarge the gas port.

You might want to post in the gunsmith section to see who has cut down a 1187 barrel before.

There will be no problem for the collapsible stock with S7J's RSS system because I remember the recoil spring will re-arrange in the forend.

I will be more concern about the gun's cycling on shortened barrel if the gas port is not enlarged.

May be some one has experience cutting 1100 or 1187 barrel will chime in to confirm the proper gas port size for certain barrel length.

To the original OP I know this is going to be a unique and one of a kind tactical shotty once its done but for the price you pay you can very likely to find an used M4 and just go to the range and enjoy,no?

I was under the impression that the S&J system eliminated all the gas operation and made it into a recoil operated system? That would eliminate any gas port problems if I understand correctly.

Not 100% sure but from my understanding the system only eliminate the use of recoil spring in the buttstock and replaced with two smaller diameter springs along side of the mag tube inside the forend designed for this system.

In another words it should still require the gun's original gas system to cycle the gun.

that is a good point about the size of the gas port. I am guessing that it will be something that will have to be finely tuned once the S&J hardward recoil system in installed.

As far as buying a used m4, each to their own, i wanted to create something unique

Not sure if its helpful or not but see if you can do your math or use it as a guide with the help of these info:

i did some other reading, and am going to have to wait to see if the barrel has the self compensating gas system on it. Others have cut them down without the need to mod the gas ports.

it does not seem to be too involved in opening those ports a little bit either

You could be right because I had 1100 and 1187 before and the lug on the barrel appear different between the two but can't confirm now sold them both over a decade ago and I think the 1100 is not self compensated if memory serve me correct.

Anyway, keep us posted and I am sure this is going to be a fun and unique project

The ETA RSS system just gets rid on the recoild spring in the butt stock and the rat tail on the back on the bolt carrier.
Its is really easy to do the change over if your even a little bit handy.
As for futting down the bbl
My test gun is a 30inch 1100 thats fun down to 20inch, have not opened up the ports, and dont see a need for it.
Remington are sending me a 11-87 with 23inch bbls that ill use for testing.
The gun in the vid above is a standard rem 1100 tac 2 or tac 4 cant remmber that have had no mods done to the bbl.
Nighthawk if building guns with this system and has no plans to open up the ports.
Sorry have not got more info up , what with the car crash this week i,m a little layed up.

Update 2011-02-21

So i went to the post office today, and the 11-87 Supermag has arrived. First things first, i know i really should have shot it... I trust the seller, and it appears to have been fired before, so i didnt bother.

1. Knocked out the dimples on the mag tube using a 5/8 socket. Had to file the ridges created, and polish afterwards in order for the barrel to slide over nicely as it did before.

2. Took the stock off. This was an absolute pain in the ass. The nut would not come, and of course, I was not going to wait weeks for the special tool. An easy out bit took it out with very little effort.. This was after quite some time of trying other methods

3. I cut the barrel down from 28" to 21". This was done right in front of the vent rib connecting piece, and i ramped the front of the rib. The 21" will allow for the +3 extension which has been ordered from Simon at S&J Hardware. The end of the barrel has been polished, and will be touched up with cold blue. This barrel is chambered in 3.5, and has the gas compensation system, so i will likely not need to open the ports. If i do, then so be it.

I am waiting on the rest of the gear to arrive from S&J, then will cut down the recoil spring tube.

looks like the eta rhine rail from s&j hardware

I think so too:
