Progressive & Single Stage Presses?

Just getting into reloading, and looking at buying the RCBS Rockchucker Supreme kit... It is a single stage press where as the Lee's im looking at are progressive, whats the difference?

Exactly...I started out with RCBS Rockchucker, and it works great. I was a self taught reloader and this unit worked great because it comes with everything you need to get started. Of course I started out reloading for rifles. Once I started loading for pistol, I tried using it for a batch of 9mm...that didn't last long. I picked up a Dillon 550 and couldn't be happier. Now I load rifle and pistol on the 550, and I use the Rockchucker from time to time for .303 .

Given that criteria, I would suggest the Rockchucker Kit. Mind you, I have never owned any of the Lee equipment, other than dies, but when ever I see the Lee stuff at a gun show, or gun shop, the stuff looks like it is meant as a children's toy...cheap and flimsy! But lots of people seem to get on with it, but they all say you have to be pretty mechanically inclined to keep it running!

I think Klondiker and I pretty much started the same way. I got a Rockchucker as my first press, works great for rifle reloading. I then got into Pistol shooting, and for the volume needed, a single stage just doesn't cut it. So I bought a used Dillon 550 from a fellow CGN'er. I still use the Rockchucker for rifle, and I also use it for .223 for my AR15, I decap, resize on the Rockchucker, then finish off the rounds in the Dillon!
 
Of the two, the Rockchucker would be the better choice. Get a Dillon 550 if you want to use a progressive to load rifle ammo.

Progressive presses are good for short cases and pistol rounds, but not so the case for large rifle. The Rockchucker kit will give you what you need.


BTW, good choice in calibers but you're missing 7.62x54R ;)
 
if your just getting into reloading..i,d say get the single stage press...its a lots easier to set up and you get to learn the different stages of reloading a bit better...
 
You've noticed everyone defends/promotes decisions they've already made. No-one wants to be wrong! Try posing your question along the lines of "Who owns both and which do you use for these rifle calibers" ? You'll get lots of answers.

I use my single stage, not my progressive for rifle calibers above .223.
 
check out hornady, the switch from ss to progess, might be a lot easier. i have a rockchucker, lee classic,& 2 550's, both the ss's work fine, the lee catches all the spent primers a BIG plus in my book & it's cheap, i use it for decaping. it's hard to beat a dillon, but if your a low volume shooter, ss is good enough ,also better for tight group fiddle ammo. you'll always need a ss, try to get one that will match your needs later on. happy crunching
