I have found a Verifier who agrees that the gun should not be prohibited, and he will try to convince the CFC to change the registration. I will update when I get more information.
The "son" can own his relatives prohib. Class 12/7 designation.

Yep....I forgot about the caveat that the firearm HAS to have been made prior to 1946 for your 12/7 designation.
No need to convince. Have the verifier call into the CFC with the model, make, and serial #, and ipso facto; the firearm is reclassified by the CFC, and they will issue a new registration card, complete with updated status.
They sure are dragging their feet on this.
