The logic of making a handgun prohibited based on barrel length because it is easily concealed, when we aren't allowed legal concealed carry in the first place -- regardless of barrel length -- escapes me.

It not about logic or reality.....its about being a Lieberal!!!

Interesting that I have been hanging onto a couple for the last few years because they were exceptionally nice but now with all this garbage about banning HG's I don't see many selling. From the guys who use this section of Gunnutz.....is this reality? Dave

I still have room for a couple more... if they are 'minty' and cool...

I was at a Bud Haynes auction years ago when c-68 was on the verge of total inactment. I and everyone else there was surprised and pleased when a local Red Deer MP bought a 12-6 handgun. His name is Stockwell Day! No kidding boys!

And the gov't. in which Mr. Day is a senior minister supports maintaining the current restricted/prohibited status quo.

He has no choice. They are on political thin ice and need to win a majority in the next election.

And now back to the subject of prohibs that go up in price, as NAA said, cool and minty!

Yeah....my I have a whole lot of rest handguns that are a hell of alot smaller than my 629 with a 4" bbl....:(

To be honest I think the prohibitions are a somewhat mixed blessing because being a target shooter it does mean when I walk into a gunshop in Canada it does usually have something on the shelf I'm interesting in looking at. I've never really had any interest in 2" barrelled revolvers, and it eliminates a lot of the dross I see in US gun shops, which are popular but which are also crap (e.g. Kel-Tec).

But on the flip side, it goes too far, even for a target shooter. How anyone can seriously suggest with a straight face that a 4-inch barrelled revolver is not a suitable choice for target shooting and is only favoured by criminals because of the concealability is totally beyond me. Don't armoured car companies get an exemption from 12(6) for their revolvers?

And some people favour guns like the Glock 19 and P228 because of the grip size, not because they're "concealable".

It's just silly really. In Finland they have a 75mm barrel limit for handguns and I think in Germany they do too (although collectors are exempt). That makes some kind of sense to me. I think it's pointless but I see some logic to it when guns can mainly be owned purely for sporting purposes.

New Zealand has a barrel length limit of 100mm for handguns imported for target shooting. Australia has a 100mm limit for revolvers and 120mm for semi-auto pistols. And Denmark has a 120mm barrel length limit as well.

What really annoys me about Canadian gun laws is not only are they pointless and illogical but they are also impossible to comprehend. The mag limits are the classic example, but on the other hand there are these lists of banned guns that are incredibly vague (what the hell does "commonly available in Canada" mean, exactly?) What is a banned ".32" exactly? Does it include an 8mm Nambu?

Why have a barrel length limit of 105mm? Why does it have to say "105mm or less". Why can't it just be a nice round figure of 100mm and say "anything less than 100mm"?

It's one thing to have a series of endless pointless stupid gun laws, but it would be lovely to actually be able to understand and follow them, eh?

I believe they did this for a reason. Many semi-autos and revolvers were made prohib using this measurement, and still are. Look at the short Kimbers, and so many new semi-autos that come out as 3.9" and can't be brought in due to what amounts to a couple of millimeters.

There is logic to it. The logic to slowly squeeze out all handguns.

Prohibs are anything but "worthless".

I have 12(5) and 12(6) grandfathering, and I never see give away pricing. Sure there are small cheap and rickety old firearms out there going cheaply, but that is hardly a great deal, it's just a crappy old gun.

Surely with 12(2)-(5) the parts of the guns themselves have some value, even if just as collector's items, right? If you ditch the receiver or torch cut it, the rest of the bits are legal, correct? The same with most 12(6) guns, just ditch the barrel and re-register it as having a 106mm barrel and it becomes legal, provided it's not in a banned calibre. So they will always have some value because they can be altered to be legal.

If you get to the point where there aren't many 12(6) licensees left around, you could just alter them.

Cybershooters is right, armoured car cie get exemption for the 12(6) class, my company is in the process to switch to the HK P2000 with the LEM trigger, but we are still unable to load them with full mag capacity?? There evn had an arguments withthe QPP for how many rounds we can load as 10 + 1 in the chamber or 9+ 1, QPP was on the 9+1 side, can you believe that? But what pissed me off is when I tried to buy a HK Compact tactical with the LEM trigger, and no ones want to sell it to me , saying that the LEM trigger is Law enforcement only...What I did is I bought a Sig with the DAK, excellent handgun. The point is 2 or 4 or 6 inches, no gun kill people, people kill people, we all know that here on this site. Charest yesterday show is new law for better gun control, and most of what he went to put in action already exist, but He can state that they are new way to act, because ordinary people don't care about the firearm law

Good Day all
Yves

I hate myself for not rushing out and buying a short barreled or .32 Cal. handgun when all this stupidity started. It blows me away that a 4" Luger has to be prohibited, or have its collector value destroyed by reabarreling.

Jason Spencer at Gunco sold $50 garbage prohibs to anyone who would buy them, just to make sure we kept or status.

I must confess I didn't know much about the new law then.
