My better half has decided to take the plunge and plans on getting her PAL/RPAL soon. I like her, I like guns, and I like to tinker; so i've decided to combine my passion for all 3 and put her together a nifty 10/22 as her first rimfire to celebrate getting her licence- everyone needs a 10/22!

I want this one to be special, but I'm not willing to just throw expensive parts at it to make it that way. She and I will both appreciate this more if there's a personal touch and/or some elbow grease into it, so that's what I'm going to do. The goal(s) of the build will be to make it unique, reliable, fun to shoot, and have some sentimental value for her because of the personal touch. There's a nagging voice in the back of my head telling me that a 10/22 is not worth this kind of effort, but I truly can't think of a better beginner gun (or any other one that I can work on)

My plan so far:

- OEM stock: stripped, sanded, stained, possibly engraved with her initials? Inlet for DAR 22TX
- OEM bolt: polished, radiused at the back for the hammer, new KIDD firing pin and extractor, might try my hand at a DIY faux color case hardening using cold blue or that metal fx stuff
- OEM trigger group: hammer and sear engagement points radiused and polished, TacSol extended mag release (cerakote to match the rest of the build), DIY auto bolt release mod
- KIDD charging handle/guide rod assy
- Receiver/barrel: DAR 22TX receiver/barrel combo: the bulk of the cost will be here if I go this route. I want a short-medium length barrel (14"ish) so that the gun is still handy and packable, and I want a heavy barrel so that it can be shot a bunch without heating up like a pencil barrel would. BUT I don't want to go too short so it's loud. My only concern is not making it weigh too much, as she's pretty petite. I would plan to cerakote this to match the rest of the build.

Undecided things:

Color scheme: she thinks case hardening looks cool, but admittedly there aren't many opportunities to do that on a 10/22. I'm not sure if there's a cerakote that mimics this? I plan on staining the OEM stock pretty dark, so I can play with a bunch of colors from there, but there won't be any "girly" colors on this one. I'm thinking a dark stock, dark gunmetal receiver/barrel combo, and a faux case hardened bolt would look subtle, but really nice after all was said and done.

What am I missing?

No real advice except make it exactly how she wants it and its best to keep it light. I put together a build a few years ago for who was my girlfriend at the time. Cut down a factory stock, painted it added decals, a scope and a few extras. Shes my wife now i guess i impressed her. She rarely shoots it these days but its there when she wants it.

For what it costs, the Timney calvin elite is very nice. It allows more customization for trigger position and includes a mag release. My wife has small hands and the trigger has allowed her a more comfortable set up. I would recommend shopping around as prices vary considerably.

Sounds expensive, but i'll look into this.

I need to find the balance between a great first rifle, and not spending a fortune on a 10/22

Volquartsen Hammer kit is easier and I would think better then polishing the OEM

You're probably right, but that's money I'd rather put into the rest of the rifle. She's a brand new shooter- we can upgrade her to a fancy trigger down the road if need be. This is one of the parts that I'd rather put elbow grease into making better, as opposed to throwing money at.

Plus, if I did that then she'd have an even nicer trigger than I do!

lol
YUP
The ruger "BX" trigger is a good starters trigger

Maybe missing something but didn’t see a buffer replacement or scratch brite the interior of the receiver

Tuffer buffer goes without saying, and i'm not sure that I'll need to polish the inside of a Dlask receiver like I would an OEM. I did mine already, and it made a big difference.

For the sake of the thread, let's assume that i'll smooth out all the things that need smoothing!

What's your plan for sights/optics? Is this going to be used a lot for freehand shooting? If so why not go the 12.5" barrel? I just picked up a 10/22 on the EE with a 8" barrel and it's super nice for free hand shooting as most of the weight is close the the shooter. Not sure how much louder those are though, but I find with ear plugs all 22lr sound pretty much the same.

Cool idea though. I'm setting up my partner's .223 and 22lr for similar reasons. I like guns, I like tinkering with them, and I have more than I need for myself.

Undecided so far. She's not much of a hunter, so I can see her using this off a bench at the range mostly. I don't want to base the gun solely around that though, which is why I need to find the balance of how easy it is to carry and shoot vs the weight. I figured a barrel the 14"ish range would work. 8" will be too short, and 18.5" (OEM) too long.

As far as optics go, I'm thinking a nice 3-9 or 4-16 with a .22lr reticle will fit the bill perfectly.

I know you said that you were going with the OEM bolt but if you really want a custom touch these guys ( https://www.jwhcustom.com/ )make nice CNC bolts and can custom engrave anything you want in it, like her name or whatever. A buddy of mine has one with his last name on it and it looks good,

Has she shot anything yet? personally I would let her shoot a bolt then a semi and see what shew prefers before going all in

How girly is she?

Once she has her PAL, sign her up for a MappleSeed event! So she learn proper technique from the start.

Personally, I'd got with a longer lightweight tension barrel, like the Whistle Pig or similar.
- it will be quieter.

I will check these out- thanks for the tip!

She has shot a bit- she prefers a semi because she doesn't have to do anything but pull the trigger lol

I would love to do a Mapleseed event too, maybe i'll sign us both up for one! Can I do that with a bolt gun? My personal 10/22 is set up for CCI Quiets right now

She's girly to the point that she's a female and likes female-esque things like makeup and shoes, but not pink things. She'd much rather prefer a wood stock with some patina than a pink plastic one for sure. My plan is to try and take a wood 10/22 stock and give it a barn board look

I think a longer lightweight barrel is the way to go as well.
