O.K guys, thought I would share a project I am working on right now. Not finnished yet, but here is my process so far. Here is a quick write up on what I am doing.

Purpose:

- To Create a stock for the ruger 10/22 suitable for benchrest purposes modeled out of an existing stock.
- Limit costs to around $80.
- Not take 2 years to make it! (Want to make this a relatively quick project, but don't know if that will happen ;))

So Here is what I have done so far:

My first step was to mill out the factory stock so that it would be easy to add onto it. To do this I took off about 1/4-3/8" on the forend on each side, I also cut down the back of the stock a fair bit, again so I could add onto it. Machine used to complete this was the Band-saw.

Next step was to make the pieces to fit onto the "main frame". I used Yellow cedar, which I knew at the time was not a good choice (lots of chemicals in it and very soft), but on the plus side it was relatively cheap (all I needed for less than $4), and very very easy to work with. To cut the forend I used the table saw and belt sander, and for the pieces for the back I used a bandsaw and an oscillating spindle sander. I also used the belt sander to slightly shape them before I put them onto the gun.

Next step was to put them all together. Used a wood rasp to shape most parts and added a bit of wood filler. Looking quite rough at this point but after sanding and some more wood filler it will be looking better.

After a bit more work with the wood rasp, sandpaper, etc it is starting to look more like I hope. Still needs a lot more work but it is coming along preatty nicely so far

Hey that is pretty slick.

I have one of these stocks I would consider selling if the price is right, or trade for for hi cap mags :D I dont do bench rest shooting so I thought I'd mention it when I seen it "getting a synthetic stock"

Looks slick though, good work. what do you plan on finishing it with?

lol, forget the paint Jordan and just give it to me. I will duplicate it out of black/yellow laminate on the new machine for you. The cost should clearly come under you new revised budget

That's something nice.
First the re-working of the 10/22 factory barrels
by 10mark22, now this.
Nice to see all the Canadian improvements
of the US product.
That's economic re-adjustment.
Cool.

Thanks for the replies!

I tried putting on a coat of primer today and it seemed to work allright so I am going to give it a try. If it doesn't work I can always sand it off or just paint with something else overtop.

I am hoping I can finnish up most of the primer tomorrow.

Nice conversion Jordan.
I have 2 of those stocks for sale. I don't have them in the EE yet but if they don't sell at the Duncan Gunshow on the 13th, I'll post them.

Hi Andrew

Still being meaning to get out to a silhoutte shoot one of these days. Just been way to busy with my three position shooting (match last weekend in New - West) one in richmond several weeks before and more coming up (Provincials, BC summer games, etc).

Will be going out to the Smallbore provincials though - and with some luck I will be able to give it a try before that. Unfortunately another shoot that is held locally is on the same day as your sihouette shoots but maybe I can find a way around. What time do they normally go to?

Hi Jordan
Our matches run from 09:30 to about 14:00.
If we don't see you on the range all the best with your competitions. Our
matches are posted on BCTSA Event Calendar. Hope to see you at one of 'em.

A.

Hi Andrew

Just got it all planned out - Going to the May match and then will be going again for the provincials. Will see you there! I think I will use my Anschutz 54MS for the silhouette class and then maybe my CZ or ruger or CIL for the hunter class.

Regarding the stock, Almost done the priming. My plan is to finnish opening up the barrel channel (tomorrow) and then glass bed it (Wednesday) and Pillar bed it (maybe tomorrow or Wednesday as well) and then hopefully start up on the painting on Thursday. So far the primer seems to be working fine on the yellow cedar :)

Here is how the stock is loooking currently. Still have to apply a couple more coats of primer (looking a bit rougher on the other side...). Definately not perfect but it should work well for benchrest

Pillar Bedding...

cz452,
Does that bedding go all the way through or is it just a washer on top with wood between it and the brass escutcheon? If you want true "pillar" bedding get one of these from Home Despot and install and countersink like you did your washer and then epoxy in place. Then drill the bottom side to make the escutcheon flush and epoxy it in place. That way you have a true "pillar" all the way through the stock and you can tighten your action as tight as you like and you won't be compressing wood. Other than that your stock looks really nice.

elimsprint,

Stupid question but what did that begin life as before you turned it into a pillar. Also do you think that would stand up as a pillar for a .308 build I'm working on ??

Sorry for the hijack!!!
