Project - 300AAC Blackout Mini-14!!

target_bear_testdrive.jpg

My wife signed off on the day pass yesterday (what a lovely girl!!) this morning I headed off to my range for the day to practice with the hunting guns. High on the list of things to practice with is the blackout mini. Mine has been working since spring, and I've had it out about three or four times. Accuracy has been on par with the rest of my .223 mini-14s, shooting well enough to be a 200-yard-or-less deer gun.

My shooting buddy also had out his mini-14 in .300 blackout. We'd been having extraction problems with it, but after another trip back to the machine shop to polish up the chamber it ran like a champ today. He has his equipped with a 2-7x28 leupold scope, and the gun appears to be capable of an honest 2MOA, possibly less with a bit more load development.

Practice today consisted of sitting and standing, and some of it was directed towards a new target that I drew up this summer. I had to sell a couple of guns to afford the dies and plates to die cut/print the LIFE SIZED cardboard GRIZZLY!! Woohoo! It was worth it!

Coming soon...a thread detailing Brobee's ever-going quest to discover the ultimate bear defence gun!! Ok, maybe not.

The target rocked though, and we had tonnes of fun with a couple of IDPA type rifle scenarios, all using the grizzly targets. THey are 47 inches tall by 43 inches wide....I knew they would be big but when I picked them up their size still surprised me. Cut cardboard is sent to the printer, where they print the black markings on the cardboard sheet. They then go back to the box factory where the silhouette is die cut from the sheet, as well as perforated scoring zones for the lungs, heart, and brain (not visible in the photograph).

We also practiced with our blackout guns on a die-cut cardboard deer I made last year. This was the prototype die-cut-target for me, and made prior to me discovering that I could also get them printed relatively economically, so it was just a brown silhouette of a mule deer doe. What a great tool for practicing hunting type scenarios from hunting type shooting positions! A big black thundercloud spraying sheet lightning all over the place came along to end the day, so we scrambled to clean up and I did not get any pictures of the deer target however I will next time we're out.

We had a gas...so much so that I spent this evening drawing up the fill for the mule deer sillhouette so I can get them printed like the bear. I've also got a soldier (think figure 11 replacement) and a wolf in the works....:)

The Shooting Edge (site sponsoring dealer) bought some of the bear targets from me, so anyone (Calgary Local) interested can buy them from TSE. Non local folks would be out of luck for now, until I can figure out how (and where) to move a pallet full across the country.....and it would be a massive pallet! The 300 I had made make a pile that stands about 5 feet tall.

Anyway....Project-Blackout-Mini is almost done - all that's left now is to take it deer hunting come November. I can hardly wait!

Cheers,

Brobee

Sounds like a winner.

The 300AAC round seems perfect for the Mini-14 chassis. The .223 is a round that begs to be used on small game requiring MOA or better accuracy but the 300AAC is like a modern 30-30, great for close range, medium sized game animals.

And who knows, perhaps with some load development it will show some accuarcy potential

One of the best threads I have read on this forum. Brobee should get a CGN medal for his work. Now we just need someone to do the same king of work with a Tavor and a match grade stainless barrel :)

I thoroughly ENJOYED this thread! Can't wait to see the pics from your SUCCESSFUL deer hunts!!!

Thank you for posting!

Cheers
Jay

Way to go !!!

You have done something that a great big corporation said could not be done

interested in what barrel twist you used and what group size you are getting

I enjoyed this. Have been a mini-14 owner since ruger first sold them. They have their limitations, but are a fun gun. Wolf Gunsprings make a great product. I have replaced the factory op rod spring on the ranch rifle with wolf springs and it seem to work better. I got the gun cheap because it didn't eject and Wolf made it "better".
