I have plans to build a .450 Marlin on a bolt action, and today picked up a small-ring KAR98 Mauser manufactured at the AMBERG arsenal in 1909. The action needs to be cleaned up but it looks sound and feels smooth. Are there any heat-treating issues with this early Mauser that may cause problems?

Should do fine I think. However, most people go after 11mm mausers ;) and build 45 caliber rifle...

I thought about the .458x2" ....it is nearly identical to the .450 Marlin ballistic-wise. However, with availability of .450 factory brass I won't have to form cases from other magnum brass. Mind not totally made up tho'. Thanks.
